PAC, UCSB Pick Up Weekly Accolades
Pacific's Daniel Johnston earned Big West Player of the Week honors, while UC Santa Barbara's Matt Vedo collected Big West Pitcher of the Week accolades.
Johnston kicked off the three-game series versus UC Davis with a four-for-four day at the plate, which included a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored. The Portola Valley, Calif., native followed that up with a one hit performance on Saturday. In Sunday's matinee (2-for-4), he singled in the eighth inning, stole second base and tagged on a fly ball to right center to advance to third. He later scored the game-winning run off a ground ball to short as the Tigers won in their final at bat for the fifth time this season. For the week, he hit 7-for-12 and tallied three runs and one RBI.
Filling in for an injured pitcher, Vedo tossed a compete game versus Cal State Northridge, leading the Gauchos to their lone win of the series. In Sunday's contest, the Colusa, Calif., native allowed just four hits and one unearned run while striking out a career-best nine batters. He retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced, including 13 in a row at one point. The only time he allowed a runner past second base was in the sixth when CSUN scratched across its only run of the day.
