Three Big West Individuals Selected For NCAA Singles And Doubles Draws
UC Irvine's Chris Kearney will join the Cal Poly duo of Andre Dome and Alexander Sonesson as participants in the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships May 25-30 at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif.
Kearney is one of 64 players who will compete in the singles tournament. He qualified automatically as the Big West's highest nationally ranked player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. Kearney is currently No. 42 in the rankings. The junior transfer from North Carolina owns a 16-7 record in dual matches this season, including 13-7 at the No. 1 position for UC Irvine. He was recently named the Big West Player of the Year, becoming the first Anteater to do so since 1992.
Dome and Sonesson also earned automatic qualification to the 32-team doubles tournament. The Cal Poly tandem's No. 49 national ranking is tops among Big West doubles teams. The pair is 12-4 at the No. 1 position for the Mustangs, with wins against nationally ranked opponents from Washington and UC Irvine. Dome and Sonesson are All-Big West First Team selections in doubles.
Neither the singles nor doubles draws have been announced by the NCAA.
