In The Standings
Defending champion Cal State Fullerton continues to lead the Big West Conference with just four weeks left in the title race. Despite posting a 3-3 league mark over the past two weeks, the Titans sit atop the leaderboard with an 11-4 record. They are followed by UC Irvine (8-4) and Cal Poly (9-6). Long Beach States 8-7 places them fourth while UC Davis and UC Riverside are tied for fifth at 6-6.
On The Boob Tube
The second of two Big West contests is slated to air this weekend on ESPNU as part of its 2011 college baseball coverage. The all-important showdown that pits second-place No. 17 UC Irvine against third-place Cal Poly at Cicerone Field Anteater Ballpark is slated to air Sunday, May 8 at 2:00 p.m. The Mustangs have been hot in the month of April, posting an 11-6 mark, which includes a seven-game win streak from April 12-22. The Anteaters, who are making their third appearance on the small screen this year, are coming off a series win over Cal State Bakersfield.
Feelin' Hot, Hot, Hot
Cal Poly isnt the only team streaking late in the season. The UC Riverside Highlanders won a season-best seven straight before falling to UC Santa Barbara, 9-5, Sunday afternoon. UC Riverside has won three of its last four weekend series and finds itself knotted in fifth place in the Big West standings. They look to continue with their winning ways with a midweek road trip to USC and a three-game home conference series versus No. 10 Cal State Fullerton.
UC Davis' Spring Cleaning
Fueled by Scott Kalush's grand slam and a stellar pitching performance by Anthony Kupbens, UC Davis recorded it first series sweep of the 2011 season. The Aggies downed the Cal State Northridge Matadors at Dobbins Baseball Complex by scores of 9-3, 6-0 and 5-2. UC Davis has won two of its four conference series, with the other series win coming against Long Beach State.
Serrano Captures 100th Win, Lee Approaches Milestone
Cal State Fullerton skipper Dave Serrano collected his 100th Big West Conference victory on Saturday, April 30 with a 6-4 win over Pacific. Serrano, currently in his seventh season in the Big West, fourth at Cal State Fullerton, becomes the 10th Big West coach to reach the milestone.
In his ninth season at the helm of the Mustangs squad, Larry Lee is one win shy of his 100th Big West victory with a 99-96 mark. Prior to last week, UC Santa Barbara head coach Bob Brontsema was the only active coach with a 100-plus league victories at 191.
Ramirez Climbing Big West Annals
In Cal State Fullerton's 5-4 win over UC Santa Barbara on April 16, Nick Ramirez notched his ninth save of the year and 27th of his career. Ramirez's 27 career saves ties him for fifth in the Big West record book with Cal State Fullerton's Vinnie Pestano (2004-06) and Long Beach State's Neil Jamison (2003-05). The junior from Anaheim, Calif., tallied 11 saves during his sophomore season and seven during his freshman campaign.
The Big 3-0
League-leading Cal State Fullerton became the first Big West team to notch its 30th win of the season. The Titans accomplished the feat on Sunday, May 1 with a 6-4 win over Pacific to continue their successful streak of 30-plus win seasons. UC Irvine will be joining Cal State Fullerton shortly as the Anteaters are just two victories shy of reaching the same milestone.

There have been a multitude of tightly-contested battles on the diamond this season for the Big West Conference. The nine league schools hold a 37-26 mark in the one-run nonconference decisions. Pacing the conference in one-run decisions is Long Beach, playing 14 tightly-contested battles. The 49ers, who rank among the top 10 in the nation in most one-run decision games played, have won nine down-to-the-wire contests, three in extra-innings.
Best Of The Big West
Of the nine current members in the Big West Conference, six of them have won the Big West title - Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara and the most recent addition, UC Irvine, who won its first-ever title two years ago with a near perfect conference mark of 22-2.
Trio Listed On Stopper Of The Year Watch List
On April 21, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced the midseason watch list for the seventh annual NCBWA Stopper of the Year award, which is given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. Included in the elite field were three representatives from the Big West Conference - Brian Hernandez (UC Irvine), Eddie Magallon (Long Beach State) and Nick Ramirez (Cal State Fullerton).
Cal State Northridge Hires New Head Coach
Matt Curtis, who for the last ten years has been a major contributor in one of the West Coast's most successful college programs, has been hired as head baseball coach at Cal State Northridge. Curtis comes to CSUN from Fresno State where he served as assistant coach for a program that has won five consecutive Western Athletic Conference titles, made four NCAA tournament appearances in the last five years, and won the 2008 College World Series.
Buckley Named Long Beach State Head Coach
Following the retirement of Head Coach Mike Weathers at the end of the 2010 season, Troy Buckley was promoted to head coach. Buckley made his return as the team's pitching coach for the 2010 season after spending two years as the Minor League Pitching Coordinator with the Pirates. Since Buckley came to Long Beach State in 2001, the Dirtbags have earned five Big West Pitcher of the Year awards, and in 2004 Jered Weaver was named the National Player of the Year after posting a 15-1 record with 213 strikeouts and a 1.62 ERA.
