Kalush, Whitehouse Awarded Weekly Honors

5/2/2011

UC Davis junior Scott Kalush's heroics at the plate garnered him Big West Player of the Week honors and UC Irvine sophomore Matt Whitehouse's mound mastery of Cal State Bakersfield resulted in Big West Pitcher of the Week accolades.

Kalush played a key role in the Aggies' sweep of Cal State Northridge, hitting .455 (5-for-11) with three runs scored and seven RBI.  In the series opener on Friday, Kalush blasted an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam and a 4-0 lead that UC Davis would not relinquish in an eventual 9-3 victory.  The catcher drove in two more runs with a single and a double, ending the afternoon with a career-high six RBI.  On Saturday, Kalush delivered his second home run of the series, a solo shot in the fifth inning that increased the Aggie lead to 5-0.  Kalush's grand slam was the first of his career and the first by an Aggie since Daniel Descalso hit one on May 5, 2007.

Whitehouse tossed eight outstanding innings of three-hit ball in UC Irvine's 7-0 shutout of Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday in the rubber game of the series.  He set career highs for innings pitched and strikeouts (7) and did not allow a walk in a 106-pitch effort.  The Roadrunners had scored a combined 11 runs in the previous two games before Whitehouse stifled their offense.  He lowered his ERA to 1.54 and remained undefeated at 3-0 in five starts.  In 16 appearances, Whitehouse has limited the opposition to a .175 batting average.
