Hairgrove, Fischback Nab Weekly Accolade
Trevor Hairgrove's (UC Riverside) explosiveness from the plate and flawlessness on the field earned him Big West Player of the Week accolades and Cal Polys Steven Fischback, who was impressive on the mound last week, was rewarded with Big West Pitcher of the Week honors. This is the first time this season both schools have collected their respective awards.
Hairgrove extended his hitting streak to 11 games over the weekend, scoring the game-winning run in UC Riverside's 3-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday, and driving in both runs in a 2-0 win on Friday. In the final game of the Roadrunners series, the Highlanders erased a 3-1 deficit with a seven-run eighth inning, and Hairgrove capped the rally driving in the fifth, sixth and seventh runs with a double to right center. He would eventually score the team's eighth run. Hailing from Highland, Calif., Hairgrove also was flawless at shortstop in the series, handling all 14 chances over the three games. Hairgrove now leads the Highlanders with a .341 batting average while his .417 on base percentage and 19 RBIs rank second on the squad.
Fischback earned his first career win against a top-25 team, pitching a complete-game five-hitter in a 4-2 decision against No. 5 Cal State Fullerton on Friday night, clinching the three-game series. The Walnut Creek, Calif., native, who missed the entire 2009 and 2010 seasons due to labrum surgery, improved to 4-2 on the year and lowered his earned-run average to 3.60 by walking three (two intentionally) and striking out seven Titans. Pitching his second career complete game, he retired the side in order three times. With the help of Fischback, Cal Poly won the series against Cal State Fullerton for the second time in 38 years.
