O'Connell, Hillman Collect Weekly Honors
Cal State Fullerton picked up its third straight Big West Pitcher of the Week honor in Colin OConnell, while UC Irvine's Drew Hillman received the Big West Player of the Week award.
Hillman led UC Irvine to a 3-1 week, batting .625 with 10 hits and six RBI to go along with seven runs scored and three stolen bases. After kicking off the week with a hit against San Diego State, Hillman drove in four runs, scored three and blasted his third home run of the season, a three-run shot in the series opener against the Tigers.
Hillman continued his hot hitting Saturday with a pair of hits, including the first of three doubles in the series. Sunday, Hillman was perfect at the plate, going 6-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI. He doubled twice and scored four times, including crossing the plate as the eventual game-winning run in the seventh to break a 5-5 tie as UCI clinched the series. He became just the second Anteater to record six hits in a single game and the first since 1985.
OConnell picked up a pair of wins last week and didnt allow a run in 11.1 innings of work to help the Titans to a perfect 4-0 week. Overall, the right-hander struck out 13 without a walk and surrendered just seven hits. On Tuesday at Loyola Marymount, the Riverside native started and faced just one over the minimum through six innings. He gave up just two hits and struck out four. On Saturday against UC Santa Barbara, OConnell came in to relieve Jake Floethe in the second inning, and proceeded to tie his career-best in strike outs with nine over 5.1 innings of work.
