Titan Duo Named Big West Player/Pitcher of the Week
Cal State Fullerton first baseman Nick Ramirez collected Big West Player of the Week accolades, while teammate Jake Floethe became the first Titan to be named Big West Pitcher of the Week for the 2011 season. Ramirez is the third Titan to receive player of the week recognition.
Ramirez's performance at the plate contributed to the Titans' perfect 4-0 record over No. 24 UCLA and UC Davis. The junior from Anaheim, Calif., led the Titans in hits, RBI, home runs, total bases, average, slugging and on base percentage. On Tuesday, Ramirez was hit by a pitch twice and scored a run in the close 5-3 win over the nationally-ranked Bruins and followed that up with hits in all three Big West games against UC Davis.
On Friday he was one of 12 Titans to collect an RBI in the 14-0 shutout of the Aggies. The next day his eighth inning sacrifice fly broke a scoreless tie driving home the game-winner, and then he belted his third home run of the year in the ninth as the Titans cruised to a 7-0 series clincher over Davis. In the finale, Ramirez was hit by a pitch and came around to score the winning run in the Titans' two-run seventh. For the week, he went 6-for-12 for a .500 batting average, while recording four runs and four RBI.
Floethe faced just three batters over the minimum over eight innings of work as he two-hit UC Davis in the opener of the Big West Conference schedule Friday afternoon. The Martinez, Calif., native, surrendered a hit in the third inning that was almost caught by his left fielder, and then a second to a pinch hitter in his final inning of work. Floethe did walk two, but induced three double plays, two of which got him out of innings. With the combined shutout, Floethe lowered his ERA to a minuscule 1.52 over 40-plus innings of work.
