Haddow, Hummel Grab Big West Honors
For the second straight week UC Santa Barbara collects Big West Baseball Player of the Week honors with Mark Haddow earning the distinction, while Jake Hummel nabbed Pacific's first Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week accolade of the season.
Haddow led the Gauchos with six RBI, playing a huge part in the team's two wins this last week. The right fielder from San Diego, Calif., had four RBI in the Gauchos midweek contest versus USC, tying a career-high in the 5-2 victory. Haddow registered a two-run double and a two-run home run in the win, driving in the game-winning RBI. In the final game of the series versus No. 23 Oregon State, Haddow was 2-for-5 with two RBI and he drove in the game-winning run for the Gauchos. For the week, Hadow hit 6-for-16 (.375) and posted a .686 slugging percentage and .444 on-base percentage.
Hummel tossed a complete game shutout over San Francisco Sunday afternoon, striking out a career-high 10 batters as he went the distance for his second complete game of the year. One of the two walks he issued was intentional as he pitched out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the eighth. The Peoria, Ariz., native's 10th strikeout was dealt to the final batter of the game, as he punched out Aritz Garcia. Of his 136 pitches, 93 went for strikes as he threw first-pitch strikes to 22 of 35 batters. He has allowed two earned runs on less in five of his six starts. Hummels 10 strikeouts topped his previous career-high of eight against UC Santa Barbara on May 30 last year.
