UCSB Sweeps Big West Weekly Awards
UC Santa Barbara teammates Sean Williams and Matt Vedo guided the Gauchos to a 2-0 week, earning them Big West Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, for the week ending March 20.
Williams went 6-for-7 (.857) with two game-winning RBI in the Gauchos' two wins over Nevada on Saturday. The Costa Mesa, Calif., native knocked in UC Santa Barbara's first run in the first game of the doubleheader with a sacrifice fly. In the second game of the twin bill, he blasted a double to drive in the first run of the 2-1 ballgame. Williams also stole his first base of the season in the second game of the doubleheader.
Vedo was one out away from tossing a no-hitter in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Wolfpack. He struck out a career-high eight batters and walked three, but an error in the ninth inning led to a two-out double, preventing Vedo from throwing the first no-no by a Gaucho since 1980. The Colusa, Calif., native instead threw his first complete game tossing 113 pitches in the effort. He did not allow a runner past first base until the ninth inning and retired 13 batters in a row at one point.
Other players nominated: Michael Lorenzen (Cal State Fullerton), Sean Williams (UC Santa Barbara), Brett Christopher (Pacific)
