Long Beach State nabbed its third straight Big West Pitcher of the Week honor with Andrew Gagnon's nod and Cal State Northridge's Drew Muren and UC Irvine's D.J. Crumlich received Big West Co-Player of the Week accolades.
In the Matadors midweek contests against San Diego State, Muren hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Cal State Northridge a 10-8 lead over San Diego State in a game where the Matadors went on to defeat the Aztecs, 12-9. Hailing from Ramona, Calif., Muren knocked in five RBI and went 3-for-5. In the weekend series versus Lafayette, he hit 6-for-17, scored five runs and drove in two. Muren, who opened the series with a solo homerun, tallied a double in three of the four outings against the Leopards. Muren's effort guided the Matadors to a 3-2 week.
Crumlich, who hit .500 for the week, singled in a run in UC Irvine's win over No. 19 UConn for the team's first victory against a ranked team this season. He went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI in the opener against Sacramento State. Saturday he drew two base on balls and scored once as the Anteaters edged the Hornets and handed Mike Gillespie his 900th career win. The Irvine, Calif., native capped the series with a 2-for-3 performance Sunday, including a two-run single that drove in the team's eighth and nine runs in a 9-7 win.
Gagnon faced his fourth ranked opponent in four weeks Friday afternoon, and delivered once again in a 2-1 victory over No. 18 Rice at AT&T Park. The Brentwood, Calif., native pitched eight innings and scattered six hits, while striking out six and allowing just one run to defeat the Owls. With the win, Gagnon lowered his ERA to 1.30 on the season after facing Cal State Fullerton, Arizona, Oregon and Rice in his first four starts.
