Pedroza, Gagnon Earn Weekly Honors With Wins Over Top Competition
Guiding their respective teams to wins over nationally-ranked opponents earned Cal State Fullerton's Richy Pedroza Big West Baseball Player of the Week and Long Beach State's Andrew Gagnon Big West Baseball Pitcher of the week, for the week ending February 27.
Pedroza was a catalyst to Cal State Fullerton's offense, registering four runs and one RBI in a week where the Titans faced LBSU in a single nonconference contest and No. 4 TCU in a three-game road series. His efforts helped the Titan tally a 3-1 record. Pedroza reached base (via error, hit, or HBP) 10 times in 19 plate appearances setting the table for numerous Titan threats. He was one of two Titans to hit in all four games on the week and upped his average to .393. On Saturday, Pedroza's sacrifice bunt drove home the game-winning run, and on Sunday, he singled and scored the game-tying run as the Titans went on to take a series against the nationally-ranked Frogs.
Gagnon led the Long Beach State to a win over No. 17 Arizona on Friday night, throwing 7.2 scoreless innings without issuing a walk in an eventual 2-1 victory. The Brentwood, Calif., native, struck out a season-high seven batters before being relieved due to reaching a pitch count and scattered four hits against the Wildcats.
