MW Tennis Release No. 6
The UC Davis women's tennis team is off to a 3-0 start in conference play and has won seven straight matches overall. Meanwhile, the UC Irvine men's tennis team is rolling along with a six-match winning streak.
UC Davis Women Extend Win Streak To Seven
An unfamiliar face sits atop the Big West women’s tennis standings in UC Davis. The Aggies, which finished 3-5 in 2008 and posted back-to-back 2-6 Big West records in 2009 and 2010, have won their initial three league matches this season. The Aggies defeated Cal State Fullerton (7-0), Cal State Northridge (5-2) and then-No. 69 UC Irvine (5-2) on consecutive days to zoom to a 3-0 Big West start. Youth is largely responsible for the Aggie success, with freshmen Megan Heneghan, Kelly Chui and Nicole Koehly joining sophomores Ellie Edles and Lauren Curry in the starting lineup. Curry has won seven straight matches while Heneghan has downed her last six opponents at No. 1 singles.
Long Beach State Puts Streak Back On The Line
Long Beach State, in the midst of a 12-day break, returns to action at home on Friday versus UC Riverside. The 49ers then travel to UC Irvine on Saturday. The 49ers bring a 29-match winning streak in regular season matches against Big West opponents into this week’s action. They have not lost a regular season conference match since 2007. LBSU has five straight contests heading into the matchup with the Highlanders.
UC Irvine Men Take Momentum Into Break
Enjoying a six-match winning streak, the UC Irvine men probably have no interest in taking a break from competition. But the schedule has the Anteaters idle for nearly two weeks. UCI returns to action on Friday, March 4 in a highly anticipated matchup at UC Santa Barbara. The Anteaters have picked up momentum after a tough 1-4 start, including three losses to teams ranked in the top 15 nationally. UCI’s current win streak includes victories over No. 53 San Diego State and No. 57 Oklahoma State.
Two New Teams Welcomed Into Campbell/ITA Rankings
UC Santa Barbara’s women and Pacific’s men are the newest Big West representatives to the Campbell/ITA rankings, released on Feb. 22. The Gauchos enter the rankings at No. 57 after a 5-1 start. The Tigers are ranked No. 74 on the men’s side. Pacific is coming off a win over then-No. 66 San Francisco last week. Familiar faces include the Long Beach State women ranked No. 54, UC Irvine men at No. 52 and UC Santa Barbara men at No. 65. Individually, Cal Poly’s Andre Dome and Alex Sonesson are No. 36 in men’s doubles, while the Cal State Northridge women’s duo of Brooke Doane and Jennifer Sher rank No. 78 in doubles. In men’s singles, Chris Kearney of UC Irvine is ranked No. 59.
Indian Wells To Host Big West Tennis Championships
For the eighth straight year, Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship. One of the most prestigious facilities in the United States, Indian Wells will host the six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 28-May 1. The UC Irvine women and men swept the 2010 crowns, halting Long Beach State’s streak of six straight women’s titles and UC Santa Barbara’s string of four consecutive championships.
