Fox, Larkins Begin Season With Weekly Honors
UC Irvine's Jodan Fox and UC Riverside's Matt Larkins kicked-off the 2011 baseball season with stellar performances to pick up the Big West's first player/pitcher of the week awards.
Fox paced the Anteaters with eight RBI as UCI registered a sweep over Nevada in the opening weekend of the 2011 season. In the series opener, the junior infielder was 2-for-3 with a sacrifice and two RBI as the Anteaters recorded their largest margin of victory on opening day in program history (13 runs). Saturday he posted a career-high five RBI to help the Anteaters clinch the series against the Wolf Pack. In the final game of the series, the Hacienda Heights, Calif., native, was 2-for-4 with a double and he added two more hits, including a double and an RBI Sunday in the sweep.
For the week, Fox batted a team-leading .538 and led the Anteaters with seven hits.
Larkins led UC Riverside to its first win of the 2011 season after tossing 8.0 shutout innings against Loyola Marymount. The right-handed pitcher from Corona, Calif., recorded a career-high 11 strike outs and did not issue a single walk. Behind the efforts of Larkins, one of two UC Riverside pitchers to tally double-digit strikeout this weekend, the Highlanders went on to defeat the Lions 3-0.
