Casper Ware (Cerritos, Calif./Gahr HS) battled stomach flu, foul trouble and opponents intent on stopping him, but he was undeterred in a couple of dominating road performances that earned him Big West Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors.
Ware averaged 22.5 points, 5.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game as the 49ers upended UC Davis (93-69) and Cal State Northridge (79-62) to maintain a two-game grip on first place in the Big West standings.
The junior guard connected on all seven of his field goal attempts, including 4 of 4 from three-point range, and finished with 23 points in the win over the Aggies. He added seven assists and five steals in 34 minutes, showing no ill effects from the team’s 12-day layoff from competition.
Ware came into Saturday's showdown with second place Cal State Northridge battling the flu. He also was hampered with foul trouble, drawing his fourth foul on a charge with over 16 minutes to play in the game. He left the game with LBSU up 7 and returned with just under eight minutes remaining and his team clinging to a one-point advantage.
Despite the obstacles, Ware produced 13 of his 22 points upon his return and led the 49ers on a late game charge. He finished the game shooting 5 of 9 from the floor and 9 of 12 at the free throw line.
