MW Tennis Release No. 4

The Cal Poly men's tennis team has parlayed a 5-1 start into national recognition, entering the Campbell/ITA rankings at No. 75 this week.  The Mustangs play seven of their next nine matches at home, but do not return to action until Saturday, Feb. 19 against Sacramento State.

Cal Poly Men Enter National Rankings
A 5-1 start to the season has propelled the Cal Poly men’s tennis team into the national rankings.  The Mustangs entered the Campbell/ITA rankings at No. 75 this week after beating Southern Mississippi, New Mexico State and then-No. 68 UNLV last week.  Cal Poly’s only setback came against No. 26 Washington.  Strong play throughout the lineup has contributed to the solid start as No. 1 player Andre Dome is 5-1 in singles dual matches while freshman Marco Comuzzo is 4-1 playing at the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions.  After playing their opening six matches on the road, the Mustangs make their home debut against Sacramento State on Saturday, Feb. 19.  Cal Poly plays seven of its next nine contests at home.

Cal State Northridge Women Take Shot At 49er Streak
Cal State Northridge continues a stretch of five straight matches against Big West women’s tennis opponents, visiting No. 43 Long Beach State on Saturday at noon.  The Matadors have split their first two league contests, defeating Cal State Fullerton and falling to Cal Poly.  CSUN looks to halt an impressive Long Beach State streak as it prepares to face its fourth ranked opponent on the young season.  The 49ers have won 28 straight regular season matches against Big West foes dating back to 2007.  LBSU finished Big West play undefeated (8-0) in each of the last three seasons, and won the final three matches in 2007 to begin the streak.

Home cooking is the theme for the women’s schedule this week.  Ten of the 14 matches against non-conference foes will be played on Big West home courts.  UC Irvine hosts Nevada and Wyoming, Cal Poly welcomes Cal State Bakersfield and Loyola Marymount, and Long Beach State entertains Hawai’i and Nevada as part of a busy week for the trio.

Six Big West Schools Inhabit Campbell/ITA Rankings

The most recent Campbell/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll came out on Feb. 8, with three women’s and three men’s Big West teams represented.  Long Beach State heads the women’s poll at No. 43, followed by No. 67 UC Irvine and No. 68 Cal Poly.  On the men’s side, UC Irvine is the top Big West squad at No. 54.  UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly are ranked No. 60 and No. 75, respectively.

Indian Wells To Host Big West Tennis Championships
For the eighth straight year, Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship.  One of the most prestigious facilities in the United States, Indian Wells will host the six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 28-May 1.  The UC Irvine women and men swept the 2010 crowns, halting Long Beach State’s streak of six straight women’s titles and UC Santa Barbara’s string of four consecutive championships.
