NOTEWORTHY

Light Week Of Action For Women’s Water Polo
The women’s water polo schedule is rather bare this week with only seven matches on tap.  UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara are idle.

Cal State Northridge, which did not play last week, returns to the pool for the busiest stint of any Big West team.  The Matadors battle Azusa Pacific, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Concordia (Calif.) on Saturday as part of the Cal Baptist Tournament.  Long Beach State heads down south to face No. 17 UC San Diego and No. 10 San Diego State in single matches.  UC Davis contests its home opener against No. 15 Indiana, while Pacific welcomes Cal State East Bay in its home debut as well.

The Big West is 13-12 against non-conference opponents through two weeks of the season.

UC Irvine Heads List Of Five Ranked Big West Teams
UC Irvine dropped one spot to No. 11 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association poll after going 3-1 last week, the lone setback a two-goal affair to No. 7 Michigan.  The Anteaters are idle this week and return to action on Feb. 12-13 at the prestigious Triton Invitational.

UC Santa Barbara is next in the poll at No. 12, followed by No. 13 Cal State Northridge, No. 16 UC Davis and No. 19 Pacific.  Long Beach State is receiving votes.

The Gauchos have been the busiest of the Big West squads with nine matches played and a 6-3 record.  All three UCSB defeats have come to ranked opponents, including a heartbreaking 11-10 overtime loss to No. 7 Michigan on Friday.

Big West Owns Automatic Qualification To NCAA Championship
The Big West fulfilled a two-year waiting period to earn automatic qualification to the NCAA Championship, meaning the winner of this year’s conference tournament will receive one of eight slots in the national tournament.  The third annual Big West Tournament is set for April 29-May 1 in Santa Barbara.
