Long Beach State Looks To Continue Conference Winning Streak
Women’s tennis conference play opens this week with a pair of matches.  Three-time defending regular season champion Long Beach State travels to Cal State Fullerton on Friday.  The 49ers have won 27 straight matches against Big West opponents in the regular season.  LBSU has finished league play undefeated (8-0) in each of the last three seasons, and won the final three matches in 2007 to begin the streak.  Cal Poly hosts Cal State Northridge on Sunday in another Big West encounter.  The Mustangs are 12-4 in league play over the last two seasons.  Cal State Northridge is tied with UC Davis for most matches played (5) by a Big West team this season.
UC Irvine travels to No. 43 Pepperdine in the lone match against a ranked women’s opponent this week.  Eight of the 12 non-conference contests this week will be played at Big West home facilities.

The men’s side of the ledger features four contests against teams ranked in the top 75.  The toughest test includes UC Irvine travelling to No. 6 UCLA in a continuation of a tough season-opening stretch.  The Bruins mark the fifth straight ranked opponent for UCI, which has played No. 15 Texas Tech, No. 21 Pepperdine, No. 69 South Carolina and No. 4 Ohio State.  Playing no less an brutal early schedule, UC Santa Barbara hosts No. 47 San Diego.  The Gauchos have tangled with the likes of No. 21 Pepperdine, No. 6 UCLA and No. 7 Florida.  Pacific treks to No. 32 Arizona and Cal Poly visits No. 67 UNLV in other featured matches.

Five Teams Stay In The Campbell/ITA Rankings
The most recent Campbell/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll came out on Jan. 25, and a total of five Big West men’s and women’s teams were represented.  Long Beach State remained at No. 42 in the women’s poll, followed by No. 63 UC Irvine and No. 65 Cal Poly.  In doubles, the Mustang duo of Alexa Lee and Amy Markhoff are ranked No. 65.

UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara are ranked No. 56 and No. 61, respectively, in the men’s poll.  Anteater newcomer Chris Kearney, a junior transfer from the University of North Carolina, owns the No. 33 national ranking in singles.

Indian Wells To Host Big West Tennis Championships
For the eighth straight year, Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship.  One of the most prestigious facilities in the United States, Indian Wells will host the six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 28-May 1.  The UC Irvine women and men swept the 2010 crowns, halting Long Beach State’s streak of six straight women’s titles and UC Santa Barbara’s string of four consecutive championships.
