Big West Trio Tees Off New Year
UC Irvine, UC Riverside and Pacific men's golf teams are the first three programs to begin the 2011 spring season as they make a road trip to the Grand Canyon State for the Arizona Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Arizona. The 2011 Arizona Invitational is a 54-hole event, which will be contested at Arizona National, a par 71, 6,793-yard layout. Thirty-six holes will be played on Monday, Jan. 31 with continuous play scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. The final 18 holes will start at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1. Along with host Arizona and the Big West members, the 16-team field consists of host Arizona, BYU, California, Fresno State, Hartford, New Mexico, Pacific, Pepperdine, San Diego State, UTEP, Texas-San Antonio, UNLV and Utah.

Men's Team Hosts Anteater Invitational
The UC Irvine men's team is the first Big West school to host a spring tournament with the annual Anteater Invitational scheduled for Feb. 7-8. The two-day even takes place at the 72-par, 6919-yard Big Canyon Country Club in New Port Beach, Calif. Big West foes Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara are slated to join the Anteaters nest weekend, along with Santa Clara, Arizona, LMU, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, UCLA and USC.

Long Beach State Hosts Pair Of Tournaments
The Long Beach State men's and women's golf programs both kick off the spring season hosting their own respective event. The men's squad heads to The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, Calif., from Feb. 13-15 to host the Battle at the Beach. This year's tournament is held on the par-70, 6,900-yard Ocean North Course which will provide players with challenging holes and picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean. Participating in the second annual event are Arizona State, Arkansas, Augusta State, Colorado, Oregon State, San Diego, San Diego State, Tennessee, UT Arlington, UC Davis, UCLA and Washington.

While the men are teeing up at the beach, the women's program heads inland to the Yorba Linda Country Club in Yorba Linda, Calif., for The Gold Rush, a two-day event running Feb. 14 and Feb. 15. Two rounds will be played on Monday, followed by a single round on Tuesday. Joining the 49ers this year are BYU, Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Colorado State, Gonzaga, New Mexico State, Portland State, San Diego State, San Francisco and UC Riverside.

Aloha Aggies
What better way to spend part of the winter months than a trip to the Hawaiian Islands. Well the UC Davis men's team is doing just that. From Feb. 2-4 the Aggies are set to play in the Amer Ari Invitational at the Waikoloa King's Course in Kohala Coast, Hawaii. Shotgun tee times are set for 7:30 a.m. for each day of the tournament with 18 holes played per day. In the field and ranked among the NCAA's Top 10 Division I teams are UCLA (2), Oklahoma State (4), Georgia Tech (5), Texas (7) and Stanford (9). Texas Tech (22), USC (24) and Washington (25) are also in the top 25. Rounding out the field are Arizona State, Oregon State, TCU, Colorado, Hawaii-Manoa, San Jose State, Oregon, San Francisco and Florida State. Also participating but belonging to the NCAA Division II are host Hawaii Hilo and Western Washington University.

Aggie Women Earn Top 25 Ranking
In the final women's Golfweek/Sagarin rating of the fall season, UC Davis grabbed 23rd place with a 73.14 rating. All six UC Davis golfers enter the new season with a stroke average below 77.0. Leading the way is sophomore Demi Runas, who tallied a 73.4 stroke average over the course of the four UC Davis fall tournaments.

John Chin Receives Golfstat Cup Trophy
John Chin, a 2010 All-American at UC Irvine, received the Golfstat Cup earlier this month. Chin was the nation's top-ranked collegiate golfer last season and he was awarded the trophy by Mark Laesch, Golfstat founder. As a senior at UCI in 2009-10, Chin ranked No. 1 in the final 2010 Golfstat Cup with a 70.05 average and he finished first in four tournaments. Chin was a 2010 Golfweek and PING All-America First Team (first in UCI's NCAA Division I history) and he was named to the 2010 All-Nicklaus team. He was a three-time Big West Conference Golfer of the Year and two-time medalist at the Big West Conference Championship, including in 2010 when he won the 54-hole tournament by nine shots. Chin was a member of the 2010 United States Palmer Cup team that defeated Europe, 13-11, last June in Northern Ireland. He made his professional debut at the Reno-Tahoe Open last July, missing the cut after shooting rounds of 75-75.
