Big West Tennis Opens With Full Slate Of Ranked Opponents

Three women's and two men's squads represent the Big West in the preseason Campbell/ITA rankings as the 2011 season begins with a host of matches against top notch competition. Six women's and seven men's matches this week pit Big West teams against opponents in the ITA poll.
Big West Tennis Season Making A Racket
The 2011 Big West men’s and women’s tennis seasons swing into action with a full menu of matches against top-notch competition. Six of the nine women’s matches on tap are against opponents ranked in the Campbell/ITA poll, including three in the top 30. On the men’s side, seven of this week’s 10 opponents are in the Campbell/ITA rankings, including four in the top 25.
Long Beach State, which is the Big West’s highest ranked team at No. 42, travels to No. 19 USC for its season opener on Friday. Cal State Fullerton takes on No. 57 San Diego State and No. 67 San Diego, while UC Davis travels to No. 20 Arizona State and Pacific draws No. 29 UNLV. UC Riverside also gets an opportunity versus San Diego State.
Defending Big West men’s tournament champion UC Irvine starts the season with formidable tests against No. 15 Texas Tech and No. 21 Pepperdine. Pacific heads to the northwest for matches against No. 26 Washington and No. 43 Boise State. UC Santa Barbara treks to Pepperdine, UC Riverside sojourns to No. 31 Arizona and UC Davis visits No. 54 Santa Clara in other matches against ranked competition.
Ranked Teams, Players Include Big West In First Campbell/ITA Poll
The first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll came out on Jan. 4, and Big West teams and players were represented. Long Beach State, coming off a 19-6 season in 2000, earned the program’s third-highest preseason ranking ever at No. 42. Defending Big West women’s tournament champion UC Irvine is rated No. 63 with Cal Poly right behind at No. 64. In doubles, the Mustang duo of Alexa Lee and Amy Markhoff are ranked No. 65.
UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara were ranked No. 55 and No. 61, respectively, in the men’s preseason poll. Anteater newcomer Chris Kearney, a junior transfer from the University of North Carolina, owns the No. 33 national ranking in singles.
Indian Wells To Host Big West Tennis Championships
For the eighth straight year, Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship. One of the most prestigious facilities in the United States, Indian Wells will host the six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 28-May 1. The UC Irvine women and men swept the 2010 crowns, halting Long Beach State’s streak of six straight women’s titles and UC Santa Barbara’s string of four consecutive championships.
