UC Irvine Advances To Sweet 16
UC Irvine experienced tremendous success in the program’s inaugural NCAA Tournament appearance with two victories last week. The host Anteaters defeated Arizona State 2-1 in the first round and dispatched No. 4 regional seed Wake Forest 2-0 in second round action.
UCI became the second Big West school to advance to the round of 16. Cal State Fullerton was the first to accomplish the feat in 2005, defeating UNLV and USC at home to reach the Sweet 16. The Titans traveled to Virginia and lost 2-1 to finish the campaign 19-4-0.
As a result of Washington’s upset of No. 1 regional seed Portland, the Anteaters earned another opportunity to host another postseason round. UCI welcomes the Huskies to Anteater Stadium on Saturday, November 20 at 6:00 p.m. The winner will face either No. 2 regional seed Boston College or No. 3 West Virginia in an NCAA quarterfinal matchup the following weekend.
UCI (17-2-2), which won the Big West regular season championship with an unblemished 8-0-0 record, was selected as one of 16 host schools for the first and second rounds. The Anteaters tangle with Arizona State (9-7-3) of the Pac-10 Conference in first round action on Friday at 7:30 p.m. That matchup will be preceded by No. 23 Wake Forest (12-7-3) and San Diego (11-7-2) at 5:00 p.m. The two winners will meet in the second round on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
