UC Irvine Aims For Undefeated League Slate

Women's Soccer Weekly Release No. 11

10/25/2010

Two of the four Big West Tournament slots in women's soccer are still up for grabs.  UC Irvine already has secured the No. 1 seed and looks to become the first team in Big West history to go undefeated in league play, but first must get past Cal State Fullerton on Sunday.  Long Beach State is also in the field, and would secure the No. 2 seed with a win at Pacific on Friday.

NOTEWORTHY

KEEP AN EYE ON

Lindsay Bullock, Long Beach State
After a sluggish statistical start to the 2010 season, Long Beach State senior Lindsay Bullock is putting forth the kind of production expected from the two-time first team all-conference standout.  Bullock has five goals and an assist in the last five matches, and her six total goals ties her for sixth in the Big West.  Bullock’s increase in production coincides with Long Beach State’s recent offensive explosion, which includes 13 goals over that five-game span.  The team scored just 15 goals through its first 12 games, with Bullock denting the back of the net only once during that period.

UC Irvine Wins First Regular Season Title
UC Irvine wrapped up the first regular season championship in program history after defeating Long Beach State and UC Riverside on the road last week.  The Anteaters moved to 7-0-0 (21 points) in Big West action and 15-1-2 overall.  UCI is riding a 12-match winning streak and is unbeaten in its last 15 games.

The Anteaters close out the regular season against Cal State Fullerton in a Halloween matinee on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.  UCI is attempting to become the first team in Big West history to finish league play undefeated.  Four teams have previously gotten close to accomplishing the feat, but also had one or two ties on their final conference record.

UCI rose four spots to No. 15 in this week’s Soccer America poll.  The Anteaters have equalled the 1997 squad for most wins in a single-season with 15, and would break that mark with a win against the Titans.

UC Irvine Wraps Up Tournament No. 1 Seed
In addition to claiming the Big West regular season championship, UC Irvine also owns the No. 1 seed in next week’s four-team Big West Tournament.  The Anteaters will host a yet-to-be-determined No. 4 seed on Thursday, November 4.  The No. 2 seed will host the other semifinal matchup against the No. 3 seed.  Both semifinal winners meet in the championship at the site of the higher seed on Sunday, November 7.  UCI won the 1997 tournament title in the Big West’s second season of women’s soccer sponsorship.

Tournament Talk
Two other Big West Tournament seeds are up for grabs entering the final week of regular season play.  Long Beach State, currently in second place with 13 points (4-1-1), joins UCI in the field.  Pacific (4-2-0) and Cal State Northridge (4-3-0) are tied for third place with 12 points apiece and have the inside track on securing the final two spots.  Cal State Fullerton (3-3-0) and UC Santa Barbara (3-4-0), with nine points each, also could figure into the mix.  The 49ers would secure the No. 2 seed with a win at Pacific on Friday.  The Tigers would clinch a tournament spot with a win against the 49ers.  Two-time defending tournament champion UCSB must win at rival Cal Poly on Friday to have any shot at all at clinching a berth.  For only the second time in the 10-year history of the Big West Tournament, Cal Poly will not be included in the field.  The Mustangs are out of contention at 2-4-1.

deSeriere Moves To No. 2 On Career Shutouts List
UC Irvine senior goalkeeper Danielle deSeriere became the school’s all-time leader in shutouts with 30 after she posted clean sheets against Long Beach State and UC Riverside last week.  The 30 shutouts moved her to No. 2 in the Big West career record book.  She trails only Long Beach State’s Liz Ramos (2005-08), who owns the record with 34 shutouts.  deSeriere’s 10 shutouts this season leads the Big West and is tied for fourth-most in conference history.  She needs one more shutout to tie and two to break the single-season record.  In addition, her 250 saves puts her only 13 short of entering the Big West career top 10.

Long Beach State’s Double-Digit Deluxe
Head coach Mauricio Ingrassia has built a winning program at Long Beach State.  He racked up his 75th career win on Sunday when the 49ers toppled Cal State Northridge 2-1.  Ingrassia’s troops moved to 11-4-2 on the season with the win, giving LBSU 11 or more wins in five of the last six seasons under Ingrassia’s watch.  Ingrassia already ranks seventh all-time on the Big West career victory list, and needs one more win to slide into a tie for sixth.

Medigovich Continues To Shine
Pacific senior goalkeeper Jill Medigovich posted her third shutout in the last four games when the Tigers blanked UC Davis 1-0 on Thursday.  The performance was consistent with how she has performed over the last month of the season.  In her last nine games spanning 640 minutes of action, Medigovich has allowed just two goals for a miniscule 0.28 goals against average.  She has lowered her season GAA to 0.75, which ranks second in the Big West.

Sisler With Another Multi-Goal Performance
Cal Poly found offense this season from an unlikely source in senior Whitney Sisler.  After scoring three goals combined in her first three seasons, Sisler has netted a career-high eight goals in her farewell campaign.  She ranks second in the Big West in goals.  Sisler has scored her goals in bunches as she owns a trio of two-goal performances, including in Sunday’s 3-1 win at UC Davis.

UC Irvine Season Records Under Siege
UC Irvine is poised to break several program single-season records as the regular season comes to an end.  The Anteaters have a Big West-leading 44 assists, which is one shy of tying the school record of 45 set in 1997.  They also have broken the record for most consecutive wins as their winning streak currently stands at 12.
