Women's Soccer Weekly Release No. 9

UC Irvine puts its unblemished first place Big West record (4-0-0) and No. 19 national ranking on the line this Friday when Cal State Northridge (3-1-0) visits Anteater Stadium looking to pull into a tie for the league lead.

Jill Medigovich, Pacific
Pacific senior goalkeeper Jill Medigovich posted her third shutout of the season in the Tigers’ 3-0 win against Cal State Fullerton on Sunday.  She lowered her goals against average to 0.88, third-lowest in the Big West.  Medigovich also collected her ninth career shutout to move into fourth on Pacific’s all-time list.  In her last six appearances spanning 360 minutes, Medigovich has allowed just one goal for a paltry 0.25 GAA.  In addition, her career GAA of 0.88 is No. 1 in school history.

Top Two Big West Clubs To Square Off
UC Irvine remained unbeaten in Big West play with a pair of solid road wins against Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara last weekend.  The Anteaters improved to 12-1-2 overall and 4-0-0 in Big West action.  They have won nine straight games and are unbeaten in their last 12.  UCI is ranked in all three major national polls, including No. 19 in Soccer America and NSCAA/HendrickCars.com, and No. 20 by Soccer News.

The only contest this week for the Anteaters is a huge one with Big West title implications on the line.  UCI hosts second place Cal State Northridge on Friday at Anteater Stadium.  The Matadors are 8-6-0 overall and 3-1-0 in conference play.  They have won four of their last five games with the only setback a 1-0 decision at UC Santa Barbara on Friday.  CSUN has beaten both UC Davis and Pacific in league, and won on the road against Cal Poly for the first time in school history on Sunday.

The Anteaters already have matched last season’s win total of 12 with four regular season games to go.  One more win would give UCI its most victories since the 1998 club went 14-3-3.  The school record for most wins is 15 in 1997.

Crozier Close To Milestone
Veteran Cal Poly head coach Alex Crozier is poised to coach his 300th overall career game in the Big West this week.  Crozier, who is 168-100-30 with the Mustangs, will coach that game on Sunday in a non-conference battle with Seattle.

Long Beach State Enjoying Streak Of Success
Lurking as a solid contender in the Big West race is Long Beach State.  The 49ers are third in the league standings with seven points (2-0-1) and play just one match this week, a Sunday affair at Cal State Fullerton.  A solid result for the 49ers sets up a showdown with current leader UC Irvine on Oct. 21 at George Allen Field.  The 49ers are unbeaten in their last six contests and have outscored their opponents 14-4 during that span.  LBSU is ranked No. 5 in the NSCAA West Region, behind UCI at No. 3 and ahead of CSUN at No. 8.

Pacific Jump Starts Ailing Offense
Pacific scored multiple goals for the first time all season in its 3-0 triumph over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday.  The Tigers had been blanked in their three previous games, and had scored all of six goals in their first 12 contests in 2010.  In fact, the Tigers were scoreless against the Titans going into halftime before exploding for three second half goals in a matter of 30 minutes.  The first goal came at the 52:46 mark courtesy of Kim Hargrave, the shortest player on the team.  Her header ended a scoreless drought of 431:05 for Pacific.  The strike seemed to settle down the Tigers as the duo of Kristina Wavomba and Sammi Teramae - sporting a combined 21 career goals - netted their first scores of the year for the final 3-0 tally.

Gaucho Duo Climbing Big West Assist Chart
Assists are second nature to the UC Santa Barbara senior duo of Jacqui Simon and Kylie McDonald.  Both players recently broke into the Big West career top 10 for assists.  Simon, who recorded her 19th career helper in UCSB’s 1-0 win against Cal State Northridge on Friday, moved into a tie for seventh in Big West history.  Simon is one more assist shy of tying for sixth and two more away from a tie for fifth.  Meanwhile, McDonald’s 18 career assists tie her with five others for 10th place.

Jacobo Having Stellar Sophomore Season
There is no sophomore jinx in store for Cal State Northridge goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo.  She burst onto the collegiate scene in 2009, pressed into service as a slew of injuries forced her to burn her redshirt year.  Jacobo responded by earning Big West Freshman of the Year honors, finishing with a 5-1-0 record, five shutouts and a 0.30 GAA.  In 2010, Jacobo continues to be a stalwart in goal.  She sports a 1.16 goals against average with a league second-best 67 saves and is tied for second with five shutouts.  Jacobo blanked Cal Poly 2-0 on Sunday for her 10th career clean sheet, which already ranks her second in the CSUN record book.

Firsts For Fullerton In Road Win
Summer Chavez, Jennifer Smith and Danielle Bitonti all recorded their first goals of the season to send Cal State Fullerton to a 3-2 victory at UC Davis on Friday.  Bitonti had the clinching goal in the 72nd minute while Chavez booted in the first goal of her career.  Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Change recorded her first win of the year in net after turning away four Aggie shots.

Coleman Goes For 50th Conference Win
Pacific’s Keith Coleman aims to become only the third head coach in Big West history to accumulate 50 career conference victories when he brings the Tigers into battle on Friday at Cal Poly.  Coleman owns a record of 49-51-15 (.491) in Big West games, trailing only Cal Poly’s Alex Crozier (74) and UC Santa Barbara’s Paul Stumpf (57) on the list.
