Davis Tops The League
Two weeks of Big West play completed and only one team maintained a perfect record over the stretch. The UC Davis Aggies hold an unblemished 4-0 conference mark following a 2-0 performance last weekend at The Pavilion. This week the Aggies, riding a seven-game win streak, travel to southern California to visit Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton.
Fullerton Sweeps Competition
Cal State Fullerton is tied with Cal Poly for most overall wins in the Big West Conference with 13. The Titans, winners of nine of their last 10 matches, reached the double-digit quota in dominating fashion, sweeping all but one of their opponents. The Mustangs were the lone team that took the match to five sets before eventually falling to the Titans. On the flip side, Cal State Fullerton has only been swept by one of its opponents, then-ranked No. 23 Long Beach State.
A conference-best 10-game win streak was snapped last week when the visiting Cal State Fullerton Titans handed the Cal Poly Mustangs a 3-2 loss, ending their impressive run. The Mustangs rebounded the following evening with a 3-0 victory over No. 21 Long Beach State. They currently sit tied for second in the league standings with a 3-1 mark.
League Favorite Falls
Long Beach State is hoping last weekend becomes a distant memory after a dismal showing during their recent trip to the central coast. The preseason favorite dropped a 3-2 decision to UC Santa Barbara before falling, 3-0, to the hands of Cal Poly the following night. The last time the 49ers tallied back-to-back league losses was in 2009 (Oct. 10 & Oct. 16). The 49ers, who dropped out of the most recent Top 25 poll, return to The Walter Pyramid this weekend, where they are 7-1 this season.
Ledoux Climbing Career Ladder
Caitlin Ledoux's first kill in Long Beach State's first conference match of the 2010 season was her 1,000th of her career. Ledoux, who currently holds 1,040 kills, needs just 111 more to crack Long Beach State's top 10 in career kills.
Home Sweet Home
Cal State Fullerton has proven it is a force to be reckoned with when battling on its home court, Titan Gym. The Titans hold a perfect 8-0 record in front of their spirited fans. Not boding well for the rest of the Big West, is the fact that the Titans are lucky enough to play nine of their final 14 contests at home, all of which are conference matchups.
Also taking full advantage of their hometown crowds are Long Beach State and UC Davis, who are both 7-1. The 49ers lone home loss was to then-No. 25 San Diego, while the Aggies suffered a 3-2 defeat to Sacramento State.
The Matadors of Cal State Northridge haven't had the same success at home like many other Big West schools have had this season. Cal State Northridge has found themselves on the losing end of all four contests played at The Matadome this season. The next opportunity to capture a home victory is this Wednesday when the Matadors entertain Cal State Bakersfield.
The Elusive 'W'
Three teams remain winless in Big West play after two weeks of competition. Cal State Northridge and UC Irvine are 0-4 and UC Riverside sits 0-2 in league play. Last season the Matadors and Highlanders combined for seven Big West victories. CSUN, who nabbed its first victory last year with a 3-1 win over UC Riverside on Oct. 10, went on to win three more conference contests. The Highlanders' first of three victories was a win over Cal Poly on Oct. 23, 2009.
A year ago, UC Irvine opened league play winning six of its first seven contests en route to an 11-5 Big West mark, tying the Anteaters for second place. In a bit of a role reversal, the Anteaters, who returned five starters and 12 letterwinners to their 2010 lineup and was selected second in the preseason coaches poll, is 0-4 to start league play. UC Irvine is also struggling in nonconference action, tallying just four wins, the second lowest mark in the league.
Duo Reaches Coaching Milestone
After an impressive 3-0 performance at the UNLV Classic, Cal State Northridge head coach Jeff Stork captured his 100th career win. Over the past nine years at the helm of the Matadors squad, Stork has compiled a 100-148 mark.
A day after Stork's accomplishment, Jon Stevenson captured his 100th victory as Cal Poly's head coach with a 3-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield. In six seasons as the Mustangs leader, Stevenson has registered an overall record of 103-57. His coaching career total is 186-124 (.601).
Only 11 Big West Conference coaches have collected 100 or more overall wins during their time in the league. Three of the 11 coaches are still coaching in the Big West - Long Beach State's Brian Gimmilaro (689), UC Santa Barbara's Kathy Gregory (615) and Cal State Fullerton's Carolyn Zimmerman (121).
Titan Trio Paces Big West
A Titan trio consisting of Andrea Ragan, Erin Saddler and Cami Croteau top the Big West standings in their respective categories. Ragan holds an 11.80 assist average and Saddler averages 4.43 kills per set. The Cal Sate Fullerton libero, Croteau, has tallied an impressive 5.26 digs per set average, leading the rest of the field by nearly half a dig. As a team, Cal State Fullerton paces the league in assists (13.69 APS), kills (14.62 KPS) and hitting percentage (.265).
LBSU Tabbed Preseason Favorite
The Big West Conference head coaches selected Long Beach State to claim the 2010 women's volleyball title after receiving seven first-place votes and 79 total points. If the coaches' prediction reigns true, the 49ers would capture their third straight championship, 11th overall. Long Beach State (22-9) is coming off a stellar season where it won the Big West title with a 12-4 mark and advanced to its 23rd consecutive NCAA Tournament, 24th overall.
UC Irvine received one first-place vote and a total of 68 points to secure the second spot. UC Santa Barbara nabbed one first-place vote and 65 overall points to claim the third spot in the poll. Cal State Fullerton was selected fourth after picking up 47 points, followed by Cal Poly and UC Davis, who were tied for fifth with 45 points. Pacific secured seventh place with 28 points and Cal State Northridge and UC Riverside were knotted in the eighth spot with 14 points apiece.
