This Week In The Big West
Northern California and the central coast is where all the Big West women's volleyball action takes place this weekend. UC Davis and Pacific entertain Cal State Northridge and UC Irvine while Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara play host to Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State. UC Riverside takes a short break from league play for two nonconference contests against San Diego and Cal State Bakersfield.

A Glance Back
With the first week of Big West place in the record book, four teams maintain an unblemished record - Cal Poly, Long Beach State, UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara. Long Beach State won its lone conference contest against Cal State Fullerton, while the other three schools posted 2-0 records against their opponents. It is guaranteed that at least one more school will suffer its first Big West loss of the season this week as the 49ers take on both Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. The Aggies' upcoming opponents have a combined league record of 0-4.

Streakin' Stangs
Notching two straight Big West victories to open conference play extended Cal Poly's win streak to a league-best 10, nine of which were on the road. Of the 10 wins, four of them were sweeps, including the most recent victory against Cal State Northridge last Saturday. The Mustangs return to Mott Gym this week to begin a four-match homestand with Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton.

Ledoux Climbing Career Ladder
Caitlin Ledoux's first kill in Long Beach State's first conference match of the 2010 season was her 1,000th of her career. Ledoux, who currently holds 1,008 kills, needs just 143 more to crack Long Beach State's top 10 in career kills. Averaging 3.84 kills per set this season, the junior outside hitter ranks third in the Big West.

Best In The West...The Big West
Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State continue to dominate the Big West standings as the duo owns all the top spots except for the digs category, which UC Irvine owns with a 17.92 average. The Titans rank number one in kills (14.58 KPS), assists (13.68 APS) and service aces (1.40 APS), while the 49ers pace the league in blocks (2.89 BPS), hitting percentage (.273) and opponent hitting percentage (.142). Individually, Fullerton holds the top slot in assists with Andrea Ragan's 11. 79 average and digs as Cami Croteau averages 5.06 per set. While Pacific's Svenja Engelhardt's 4.41 kills per set leads the Big West, Betsy Sedlak of UC Davis is top dog in hitting percentage with a .487 clip.

Domination In Titan Gym
The Cal State Fullerton Titans have been nearly unbeatable early in the 2010 season as they own an overall mark of 11-4. Playing a majority of their contests in the familiar confines of Titan Gym certainly didnt hurt, especially because the Titans registered a perfect 8-0 mark during that span. Their most impressive home win thus far was a 3-0 upset victory over then-ranked No. 21 San Diego on Sept. 22. Following a trip to the central coast this weekend, Cal State Fullerton returns to The OC to play its first home conference matchups.

Duo Reaches Coaching Milestone
After an impressive 3-0 performance at the UNLV Classic, Cal State Northridge head coach Jeff Stork captured his 100th career win. Over the past nine years at the helm of the Matadors squad, Stork has compiled a 100-146 mark.

A day after Storks accomplishment, Jon Stevenson captured his 100th victory as Cal Polys head coach with a 3-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield. In six seasons as the Mustangs leader, Stevenson has registered an overall record of 102-56. His coaching career total is 185-123 (.601).

Only 11 Big West Conference coaches have collected 100 or more overall wins during their time in the league. Three of the 11 coaches are still coaching in the Big West - Long Beach State's Brian Gimmilaro (689), UC Santa Barbara's Kathy Gregory (614) and Cal State Fullerton's Carolyn Zimmerman (119).

Pestolesi Makes Name In 'Eaters, Big West Record Book
Senior Kari Pestolesi recently reached the 4,000 mark in attempts while also moving into second in the UC Irvine annals in career aces and digs. The outside hitter, who has 544 attack attempts this season, has amassed 4,102 attempts over her career and sits third in Anteater history. Pestolesi needs to tally just 115 more attempts to earn a spot in the Big West's top 10.

She also moved into second in career aces with 147 to overtake Gina Elchuck (1981-84), who totaled 142. Ten more services aces and Pestolesi will surpass former Gaucho Heather Collins to nab the 10th spot in the conference's record book. In career digs, Pestolesi has passed Wing's total of 1,280 with 1,334.

LBSU Tabbed Preseason Favorite
The Big West Conference head coaches selected Long Beach State to claim the 2010 womens volleyball title after receiving seven first-place votes and 79 total points. If the coaches prediction reigns true, the 49ers would capture their third straight championship, 11th overall. Long Beach State (22-9) is coming off a stellar season where it won the Big West title with a 12-4 mark and advanced to its 23rd consecutive NCAA Tournament, 24th overall.

UC Irvine received one first-place vote and a total of 68 points to secure the second spot. UC Santa Barbara nabbed one first-place vote and 65 overall points to claim the third spot in the poll. Cal State Fullerton was selected fourth after picking up 47 points, followed by Cal Poly and UC Davis, who were tied for fifth with 45 points. Pacific secured seventh place with 28 points and Cal State Northridge and UC Riverside were knotted in the eighth spot with 14 points apiece.

California Girls
The Big West is a California-only league and two schools have followed suit with their 2010 lineups. For the second straight year, UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara each showcase rosters composed entirely of players from the Golden State.

Crowning The Champion
Of the nine current members in the Big West, four of them have captured at least one Big West title - Cal Poly, Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara and Pacific. Long Beach State leads the quartet with 10 conference championships, followed by UC Santa Barbara and Pacific with five apiece. The Mustangs round out the field with three titles.
