Women's Soccer Weekly Release No. 6

9/20/2010

UC Irvine (6-1-2) and Long Beach State (6-3-1) are enjoying the strongest non-conference performances so far.  The Anteaters entertain No. 17 Oregon State and the 49ers welcome No. 19 Arizona State with an opportunity to head into conference play on a high note.

NOTEWORTHY

KEEP AN EYE ON

Tanya Taylor, UC Irvine
Taylor is having an exceptional senior season for the Anteaters.  She is tied for the Big West lead in points (13) and ranks third in goals scored (5).  She also has taken a league-best 29 shots.  The forward has tallied at least one point in five of her last six contests and has played a major role in UCI’s 6-1-2 record, the best in the Big West.  Moreover, Taylor is the first UCI player to move into the school’s career top 10 in points (48) and goals (18) since 2003 and in assists (12) since 2006.

MORE NOTABLES

Coaches Project UC Santa Barbara To Win 2010 Title
The nine head coaches selected UC Santa Barbara to win the 2010 Big West women’s soccer title in their annual preseason poll released on August 12.  The Gauchos collected four first-place votes and 75 points to earn the nod over defending regular season champion Cal Poly (61 points - 2 first-place votes) and UC Irvine (60 points - 2 first-place votes).  Pacific was picked to finish fourth with 59 points and the remaining first-place vote.  Cal State Northridge (45 points), Long Beach State (44), Cal State Fullerton (34), UC Riverside (15) and UC Davis (13) rounded out the poll.  The favorite Gauchos return eight starters and 21 letterwinners from the 2009 squad that finished 9-10-3 overall and in third place in Big West action at 5-2-1.

Ingrassia Reaches 70 Career Victories
After a 2-0 effort last week that included victories against UNLV and Akron, Long Beach State head coach Mauricio Ingrassia captured career wins No. 69 and No. 70 in the process.  He became just the seventh head coach in Big West history to reach 70 overall wins.  Ingrassia is 70-45-15 in six-plus seasons at the 49er helm.  His overall winning percentage of .596 ranks fifth-best all-time in Big West history.

UC Irvine Remains No. 3 In NSCAA West Region
UC Irvine stood pat at No. 3 in the NSCAA/HendrickCars.com West Regional rankings for the second straight week.  The Anteaters won twice by 2-0 scores on the road last week, defeating Fresno State and San Francisco.  They remained unbeaten in their last six matches, where they are 5-0-1 during that stretch.  UCI returns to Anteater Stadium this week to host the Anteater Invitational.  UCI meets Oregon State and Nevada in a tuneup before conference play gets underway.  Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara are ranked sixth and ninth, respectively, in the West Regional rankings.

Kugler Turning Things Around
After going the first seven games of 2010 without scoring a goal, UC Santa Barbara senior Kailyn Kugler has scored in each of the last two.  She posted a goal and assist in the Gauchos’ 2-0 triumph against Weber State on Friday.  That was on the heels of her first goal on Sept. 12 versus UCLA.  Kugler, the 2009 Big West Offensive Player of the Year, appears to finding momentum as league action approaches.  The goal against Weber State was the 24th of her career, which moved her into sole possession of ninth place in the UCSB record book.

Pacific Forges Tie With Ranked Opponent
The experience of playing high quality ranked opponents paid dividends for Pacific on Sunday as the Tigers battled No. 16 California to a 1-1 double overtime draw.  In fact, the Tigers became the first team all season to lead the Golden Bears.  Pacific scored at the 38:18 mark and proceeded to lead for the next 48:36 before California knotted the match with just over three minutes remaining in regulation.  Credit goes to the Tiger defense, which limited a potent Cal offense to just one goal after the Golden Bears had scored 19 goals in the previous four games.  The Tigers have played four top 25 opponents in non-conference play and are 0-3-1 in those contests.

Upcoming Schedule
The Big West plays one more week on non-conference matches before beginning the league slate on Friday, October 1.  Long Beach State plays its fifth top 25 non-conference opponent when No. 19 Arizona State visits on Friday.  UC Irvine and UC Riverside tackle No. 17 Oregon State in the Anteater Invitational this weekend.  Five Big West teams sport records of .500 or better and the league has posted a cumulative non-conference mark of 31-35-8.

Aggies Looking To Continue Strong Play
UC Davis extended its unbeaten streak to a modest three games following Friday’s 2-0 win against Akron at the UNLV Rebel Classic.  The Aggies dropped the tournament finale to the host Rebels by a score of 2-1.  UCD is 3-3-1 on the year and hosts San Francisco and Montana this weekend with an opportunity to begin Big West play with an above .500 record.

Cal State Fullerton Aiming To Rebound
Cal State Fullerton saw its losing streak reach a season-high four straight games after losses to Nebraska and Creighton on a midwest roadtrip last weekend.  It was the third and fourth games of a current six-match road swing that continues this week against San Diego State.  The Titans are actually in the middle of a stretch in which they play eight of nine on the road.  In the last four games, CSF has been outscored 11-3.

Anteater Keeper Climbs Shutout Chart
Senior goalkeeper Danielle deSeriere of UC Irvine recorded a pair of shutouts against Fresno State and San Francisco, giving her three for the season and 23 for her career.  She is tied for the Big West lead with the three clean sheets.  deSeriere also moved into a tie for sixth with Cal Poly’s Liz Hill (2002-05) for most shutouts in Big West history with 23.  She is one shutout away from fifth and three more shy of the fourth spot.  deSeriere is also ranked in the Big West career top 10 for goals against average and minutes played.

In Search Of Offense
After a 3-0 loss to Portland State and a 0-0 double overtime tie against Utah State, UC Riverside’s streak of matches without a goal is now at five.  The Highlanders have been held scoreless in seven of eight contests, the lone exception occurring in a 1-0 victory against Texas State on Sept. 3.
