Women's Soccer Weekly Release No. 4

9/6/2010

Cal Poly welcomes top-ranked North Carolina to Alex G. Spanos Stadium to highlight the upcoming week in Big West women's soccer.

NOTEWORTHY

KEEP AN EYE ON

Whitney Sisler, Cal Poly
Sisler is Cal Poly’s leading goal scorer with all four of her strikes coming in the last three games.  The senior scored all of one goal in 2009.  Sisler had two goals in a win over Long Island, and continued to produce last weekend with goals against both San Jose State and Arizona.  The goal versus the Spartans proved to be the game-winner.  Sisler has accounted for four of the Mustangs’ eight goals as a team.

MORE NOTABLES

Coaches Project UC Santa Barbara To Win 2010 Title
The nine head coaches selected UC Santa Barbara to win the 2010 Big West women’s soccer title in their annual preseason poll released on August 12.  The Gauchos collected four first-place votes and 75 points to earn the nod over defending regular season champion Cal Poly (61 points - 2 first-place votes) and UC Irvine (60 points - 2 first-place votes).  Pacific was picked to finish fourth with 59 points and the remaining first-place vote.  Cal State Northridge (45 points), Long Beach State (44), Cal State Fullerton (34), UC Riverside (15) and UC Davis (13) rounded out the poll.  The favorite Gauchos return eight starters and 21 letterwinners from the 2009 squad that finished 9-10-3 overall and in third place in Big West action at 5-2-1.

Cal State Fullerton Defeats Ranked Opponent

Cal State Fullerton served notice this past weekend that its talent level better be respected.  The Titans knocked off No. 18 UNC Greensboro, 2-0, in the Under Armour Invitational, marking their first win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 23 UC Santa Barbara on October 5, 2008 by the same score.  The win ended a three-game losing streak against ranked opposition.  Fullerton is finding the net much more often this season.  The Titans have scored seven goals through four games, more than half of their total (13) all of the 2009 season - comprising 19 matches.

49ers Still Making Case For Polls
Soccer America dropped Long Beach State out of its top 25 poll on Monday after the 49ers had entered at No. 24 on August 30.  LBSU downed Utah State and tied Sacramento State at home last weekend.  The 49ers lead the Big West with a 4-1-1 record and now hit the road for tough tests at Saint Mary’s and California this weekend.  Sophomore Nadia Link scored her Big West-leading fifth goal of the year in Long Beach State’s 2-1 win against the Aggies.

Offensive Antstablishment
UC Irvine is picking right up where it left off from the 2009 season as the most notorious goal scoring team in the Big West.  The Anteaters led the conference in goals scored (37) and goals per game (1.76), and are on pace to eclipse those marks in 2010.  Through five games, the Anteaters have scored 14 goals, an average of 2.80 goals per game.  The high powered UCI offense features nine players who have accounted for the 14 goals.  Senior Tanya Taylor and junior Lexi Kopf lead the charge with three goals apiece.

Drought Continues In Midwest

Preseason Big West favorite UC Santa Barbara is struggling to produce offense, although the Gauchos currently rank second in the Big West in goals per game (1.67).  After starting out the season with nine goals in their first three contests, the Gauchos have dented the scoreboard just once in their past three outings.  UCSB was shutout by both the host Gophers and Marquette last weekend at the Minnesota Gold Classic.

Winning A Close One
UC Riverside had lost eight straight one-goal games dating back to the 2009 season before finally breaking through last weekend in the Lone Star State.  The Highlanders picked up a 1-0 victory at Texas State on a goal by Melisa Escamilla.  The goal was also the first of the season for UC Riverside.  After concluding the road trip with a 1-0 loss to Texas, all four UCR games this season have been decided by a 1-0 score.

Simon, McDonald Vying For Big West Top 10
Two Gauchos are sitting on the doorstep of entering the Big West career top 10 in assists.  Seniors Jacqui Simon and Kylie McDonald have accumulated 17 and 16 assists, respectively.  Simon is one assist and McDonald two assists shy of the top 10.  The latest player to join that list was none other than former UC Santa Barbara teammate Genelle Ives, who recorded her 18th career assist last year to move into a tie for ninth.  Simon leapfrogged McDonald after notching an assist in each of UCSB’s two games last week against Saint Joseph’s and San Francisco.

Medigovich Having Stellar Senior Season
Pacific senior goalkeeper Jill Medigovich leads the Big West with a 0.64 goals against average, allowing just three goals in 425 minutes between the pipes.  She has helped the Tigers notch a 2-2-1 record in the midst of a struggling offense, which has delivered just three goals in that stretch.

Cal Poly Welcomes No. 1 North Carolina To Spanos
The featured match of the week occurs on the Central Coast as defending Big West champion Cal Poly hosts the nation’s undisputed No. 1 team North Carolina.  The Mustangs and Tarheels kickoff on Friday at 7:00 p.m. from Alex G. Spanos Stadium.  The Mustangs enter the contest 3-2-0.  They look to become the first Big West squad to ever knock off a No. 1 squad in women’s soccer.

Matadors Generate Solid Victory
Cal State Northridge erased a nine-game winless streak against nearby rival Pepperdine, toppling the Waves 2-1 on Friday.  Senior Farryn Townley scored CSUN’s first goal of the match, the 17th of her career which moved her into a tie for third place all-time in school history.  Townley also upped her career points total to 37, tying her for fifth in the CSUN career record book.  An own goal by Pepperdine cemented the win for the Matadors.

UC Davis Looking To Discover Offense
Freshman Mary Beth Mazurek netted the only goal of the weekend in UC Davis’ losses to Oregon and No. 22 Oregon State in the University of Oregon Nike Tournament last weekend.  After losing Big West leading goal scorer (13 goals) Rochelle VanBuskirk to graduation last season, UC Davis is hoping to find offense from different faces in 2010.
