Cal Poly senior
Brittany Blalock (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) captured the Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week award after defeating two ranked opponents in a loss to the nation's No. 11 ranked team and extending her win streak in doubles to eight matches.
Although the Mustangs lost 6-1 at No. 11 Stanford on Sunday, Blalock upped her dual singles and doubles records to 11-3 and 13-1, respectively. At No. 2 singles, Blalock upended Lindsay Burdette, the nation's No. 40 ranked player, to give the Mustangs their only point in the match. She overcame a first set deficit to win 4-6, 6-1, 10-0. Blalock also teamed with Suzie Matzenauer to beat the Cardinal duo of Lindsey Burdette and Hilary Barte, 8-5. Burdette and Barte are ranked No. 2 in the nation in doubles.
Blalock helped the Mustangs to wins in their two other matches on the week as they toppled Utah State (6-1) and No. 38 Dartmouth (6-1). She beat the Aggies' Jaclyn West 6-4, 6-2 and also won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles with Matzenauer against the USU duo. Despite suffering a setback against Dartmouth's Molly Scott, Blalock helped Cal Poly earn the doubles point as she and Matzenauer triumphed 8-5 from their customary No. 1 position.
Others nominated: Monica Rodriguez (Cal State Fullerton); Jaklin Alawi (Long Beach State); Jenifer Widjaja (Pacific)
NOTE: There was no Athlete of the Week award for men's tennis because the minimum number of required teams did not compete last week. Next week's men's award will include all matches played from March 15-28.
