Matthews Upsets Nation's No. 84 Player To Grab Men's Weekly Award
UC Irvine’s
Fabian Matthews (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS) had an exceptional week with an unblemished 4-0 singles record, including a win over a ranked opponent, to earn his second Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week award this season.
Matthews helped the Anteaters win all four of their matches against Penn (5-2), UC Riverside (5-2), USC Upstate (5-2) and Marquette (4-3).
His biggest win came against Marquette’s Dusan Medan, who is ranked No. 84 in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Matthews won in convincing fashion by a 6-3, 6-0 score at No. 1 singles to put the Anteaters up 2-0 in that match. He also won by the same score against UCR’s Quoc Doan to help the Anteaters to a Big West victory. Matthews also went 1-1 in doubles at the No. 3 spot with two different playing partners.
