Three Big West Athletes Garner All-America Status at NCAA Championships

Three Big West cross country athletes added to their stellar seasons with All-America honors after competing in the NCAA Championships.

Phillip Reid, the 2006 Big West Men's Athlete of the Year, finished the 10K course in 31:25 to lead the Mustangs contingent to 13th place (441), their second best finish ever at the NCAA Championships. UC Santa Barbara was the other Big West men's squad at the national championship meet. The Gauchos finished in 27th with 553 points. J.D. Krawczyk claimed All-America status after a 26th place finish (31:55).

In the women's race, conference championship and seventh-ranked UC Santa Barbara finished ninth in the 31-team field with 318 points. Lauren Christman, the 2006 Big West Women's Athlete of the Year, was the top finisher for the Gauchos with a 28th place showing in 21:22, becoming the lone Big West women's athlete to claim All-America accolades.

UC Irvine's Laura Olvera, the lone at-large qualifier from the Big West, finished in 83rd after completing the 6K course in 21:57.

Colorado won the men's team title with 94 points, while the individual title went to BYU's Josh Rohatinsky (30:45). Stanford won the women's team crown with 195 points, while Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech won the individual championship in dominating fashion at 20:11, 26 seconds better than second place.

The NCAA Division I Men’s All-America Cross Country Team consists of the top 30 finishers at the NCAA Championships plus an equal number of U.S. athletes displaced by non-U.S. citizens in the top 25. Since 12 foreign-born athletes finished in the top 30 at the NCAA meet, this year’s All-America Team consists of 42 athletes.

Since five foreign-born athletes finished in the top 25 at the NCAA meet, this year’s All-America Team consists of 30 athletes.
