Ten Big West Cross Country Athletes Named All-West Region

A total of 10 Big West Cross Country runners have been named to the Division I Men's and Women's All-West Region squads it was announced today.

On the men's side, UC Santa Barbara's J.D. Krawczyk and Mike Chavez and Cal Poly's Phillip Reid claimed the honor. Krawczyk was the top finisher among all Big West competitors at the NCAA West regional with a seventh place showing in 30:28.06 on the 10K course. Reid, the 2006 Men's Big West Athlete of the Year, finished 12th in the race, while Chavez came in 14th. The trio will be competing at the NCAA Championships as both the Gauchos and Mustangs received at-large berths into the championship meet.

The women's side received seven spots on the regional list as UC Riverside's Cristina Olivas, UC Irvine's Laura Olvera and Sara Mickelson and UC Santa Barbara's Lauren Christman, Lindsay Christman, Megan Lewis and Stephanie Rothstein garnered All-Region accolades.

Olvera, the 2005 Big West Freshman of the Year, finished third at the West Regional in 21:16.20, tops among Big West runners. Her performance earned her an at-large berth into the NCAA Championships. Lauren Christman, the 2006 Big West Women's Athlete of the Year, led the contingent of Gaucho runners with a fifth place finish. UC Santa Barbara finished second as a team and claimed an automatic berth into the national championship meet.

To be considered for the All-Region team, athletes must finish in the top 25 of their region and meet NCAA Division I Cross Country Coaches Association requirements.
