The UC Irvine and Cal Poly men's golf squads finished out play at the NCAA West Regional on Saturday, with the Anteaters placing 16th and the Mustangs 19th. In Saturday's final round, Cal Poly shot a 1-over-par 289 and UC Irvine a 6-over 294 on the 7,200 yard layout at the Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.
Arizona and Florida tied for the team title with three round totals of 827, 37 strokes under par. The top 10 teams advanced to the NCAA Championships at Sunriver, Ore. on May 31-June 3. Other qualifying teams were Arizona State (840), North Carolina State (845), Brigham Young (847), Loyola Marymount (847), East Tennessee State (849), Pepperdine (851) and Nevada (851).
Individual medalist honors went to Florida's Billy Horschel and Nevada's Casey Watabu, who each shot a 13-under 203 for the tournament.
Junior Brian Edick was the top Big West finisher, tying for 11th place after shooting a three round total of 208 (69-69-70). Edick shot 8-under for the tournament. Sophomore Garrett Sapp tied for 46th place after firing a 72 for a 2-under total of 214. Sophomore Kenny Kim shot a 79 on Saturday for a final score of 219 (69-71-79).
For Cal Poly, senior Travis Bertoni and sophomore Dave Lewinski tied for 38th overall at 3-under 213. Bertoni shot a second consecutive 69 after an opening round 75. Lewinski began the tournament with a 68 on Thursday, and finished with a 72 and 73 the next two rounds. Sophomore J.J. Scurich also had an under par performance for the tournament, with a total of 214 (73-67-74). He finished in a tie for 46th place.
Long Beach State junior Ryan Wood had his best round of the tournament with a 70 on Saturday. He finished in a tie for 99th with a total of 223 (79-74-70).
