Track and Field Embarks On Busy Week

2019 Track and Field Release No. 2

Big West Heads To Couple Of Prestigious Meets
It’s a busy week for Big West track and field as eight of the nine squads are involved at meets around the west coast. Teams are sending contingents to the USC Trojan Invitational and Arizona State Baldy Castillo Invitational – two of the marquee meets on the schedule.

A collection of schools will be participating at both meets. Long Beach State and UC Davis compete against the likes of Washington, Washington State, BYU and the host Trojans at the USC Invitational. The Baldy Castillo Invite, in addition to Big West squads Cal State Fullerton and LBSU, will feature Eastern Michigan, Louisville, Minnesota, Texas A&M and UNLV.

As for UNLV, the school is hosting its own Spring Invitational which includes Big West member Cal Poly.

UC Irvine Collegiate Classic On The Docket
UC Irvine hosts the Collegiate Classic this weekend. Other participating schools include Army West Point, Utah State, Pepperdine, South Dakota, Cal Poly Pomona and fellow Big West member CSF. For the ‘Eaters, national leader in the hammer, senior Barbara Coward is scheduled to compete.

Northridge Invitational On Tap
CSUN also hosts a meet this week – the Northridge Invitational. In the squad’s last outing at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge, women’s sprinter Sydney Mosley won the 100 meters, 200 meters and 100 meter high hurdles.

UC Davis, Hawai‘i Visits State Capital
UC Davis and Hawai‘i will also send squads to compete in the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational. The Aggies and Rainbow Warriors are coming off successful weeks hosting their own meets.

Big West Track & Field Championship Comes To UC Santa Barbara
For the first time in over 35 years, the Big West Championships will be held at UC Santa Barbara. UCSB last hosted the conference championship in 1983. That year, men’s track and field was a Big West sport, but women’s track and field had not joined the rotation. It was the very next year, 1984, when the conference added track and field as a women’s sport with three initial members – UC Irvine, UCSB and UNLV. Pauley Track will be home to the multi-events portion of the meet (May 3-4) and the full section (May 10-11).
