Month Two Of Baseball Season On The Horizon


Big West Baseball Release - Week 5

Streaking Gauchos:
No. 25 UC Santa Barbara, off to its best start in five years, enters the week riding a nine-game win streak to sit atop the Big West standings with a 11-2 record. The Gauchos, who are 17th in the first RPI report of the season, host Nevada in a midweek showdown before entertaining Cal Baptist for a weekend series.

LBSU Continues Tough Schedule:
Once again Long Beach State is slated to battle a Top 25 opponent.  Tuesday evening the Dirtbags face No. 2 UCLA for their 11th game against a ranked opponent. They follow that up hosting Minnesota in a weekend series.

Against The Rest:
Cal State Fullerton ranks 20th in the country in batting average...UC Davis has turned 14 double plays to rank 18th...The Aggies and Titans average one double play per game to tie for 23rd...UC Irvine’s 2.90 earned run average places the ‘Eaters 22nd while registering the 14th best hits allowed per nine innings (6.50) performance...UC Santa Barbara sports a .987 fielding percentage...CSUN continues to display power at the plate with 17 home runs to rank 21st...LBSU is 14th in sacrifice bunts (13) and UCSB is 13 in sacrifice flies (11)... The Gauchos 8.2 runs per game average earns them the 21st slot, while they are slugging their way to the 16th spot (.484)...Nine triples, five of which were belted by Tommy Jew, earns UCSB third place.

UCSB’s Eric Yang is hitting .457, good enough for 19th...CSUN’s Wesley Moore (2.77) and UCI’s Trenton Denholm (2.79) sit ninth and 10th in hits allowed per nine innings...UCSB’s Tommy Jew and UCI’s Brandon Lewis are knotted for 23rd after blasting five home runs...CP’s Jared Zill has struck out 35 batters to grab the 22nd spot.

Save The Day:
The Big West Conference currently has three pitchers ranked in the nation’s Top 20 in saves. UC Irvine’s Taylor Rashi sits fifth with five saves, while UCSB’s Chris Lincoln and CSUN’s Blake Schriever are tied for 15th after recording four saves.

Road Trippin’ Highlanders:
UC Riverside is in the midst of a season-long and conference-high 19-game road trip. On tap this week for the Highlanders is a three-game series at Tulane, the team UC Santa Barbara swept just last week. The Highlanders kicked off the road trip with a 7-4 win against Cal Baptist but have dropped the next five.

CSF, UCSB Showcase Top 40 Recruiting Class:
Cal State Fullerton’s incoming 2018 recruiting class has been ranked as the 13th-best in the nation according to D1 Baseball. Fullerton’s recruiting class was ranked 16th in the country by Baseball America and 33rd according to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.   UC Santa Barbara was also recognized by Collegiate Baseball with a ranking of 39th.

A New Era Begins At UC Irvine:
Ben Orloff, former Anteater shortstop and Big West Player of the Year, begins his head coaching career in 2019 as the ninth head coach in program history taking over for Mike Gillespie who led the program to 393 of his 1,156 career wins. He is assisted by former UCI teammate, Daniel Bibona, who enters his seventh year as the Anteaters’ pitching coach and J.T. Bloodworth, who joins the staff this year after spending six seasons at UC San Diego.

Big West’s 50/35:
The 2018-19 season marks the 50th anniversary for men’s sports in the Big West Conference, and the 35th for women’s.  Did You Know - Over the years, the Big West pitchers have collectively thrown 18 no-hitters and one perfect game. On February 22, 1992, New Mexico State’s Felix Holguin tossed seven perfect innings en route to a 5-0 victory. The most recent no-no was last year when Cal State Fullerton’s Colton Eastman shut down UC Santa Barbara.
