Galloway Earns Top Defensive Honor To Highlight All-Specialty Team

Becoming the first in Big West history to capture the Big West’s Best Defensive Player accolade in three consecutive seasons, UC Irvine senior JONATHAN GALLOWAY highlighted the announcement of the 2019 Men’s Basketball All-Specialty awards. Joining him on the all-specialty honor roll is UCI teammate ELSTON JONES, the Best Sixth Player. A pair of seniors – DONOVAN FIELDS of Cal Poly and JARRIESSE BLACKMON of UC Santa Barbara – were tabbed Co-Best Hustle Players.

The conference’s nine head coaches voted on the awards – the 19th straight year an all-specialty team has been named.

JONATHAN GALLOWAY, UC IRVINE
BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER
Graduate Student • Forward • Brentwood, Calif. • Salesian HS
• The Big West’s first three-time recipient of Defensive Player of the Year accolades
• Gives UCI ownership of that honor for the fourth straight year (Mamadou Ndiaye, 2016) and the sixth time in the last seven years
• Anchors a defense that ranks No. 5 nationally in field goal percentage defense (.380) and No. 22 in scoring defense (63.8 ppg)
• Became UCI’s career rebounding leader, breaking a 44-year old record held by Dave Baker (926)
• Currently with 944 rebounds, ranks No. 8 in Big West annals and is one of just nine players in league history to eclipse 900
• Ranks No. 2 in Big West in rebounds per game (8.4) and total rebounds (268), and No. 5 in blocked shots (1.1 bpg)
• Has helped the ‘Eaters to a 13-0 record this season when holding an opponent to 60 points or less
• Owns 14 games of 10 or more rebounds, including 10 such performances in Big West play

ELSTON JONES, UC IRVINE
BEST SIXTH PLAYER
Senior • Forward • Goodyear, Ariz. • Millenium HS
• The first UC Irvine recipient of the Best Sixth Player award
• Averaged 5.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.6 blocked shots per game in 32 games with five starts
• Ranks No. 2 in the Big West in blocks and No. 4 in rebounds
• Collected 224 rebounds in 629 minutes, an average of 19.7 minutes per game
• Posted three double-doubles, including 12 points and 12 rebounds in league title-clinching victory over UC Davis

DONOVAN FIELDS, CAL POLY
CO-BEST HUSTLE PLAYER
Senior • Guard • Newburgh, N.Y. • Odessa College
• The first Cal Poly recipient of the Best Hustle award
• Concluded his Mustang career averaging 17.0 points per game, No. 6 in the Big West
• Became the 24th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point mark, ending his career No. 9 all-time with 1,245 points
• Ranks No. 5 in the Big West in assists per game (4.1) and No. 6 in steals per game (1.4)

JARRIESSE BLACKMON, UC SANTA BARBARA
CO-BEST HUSTLE PLAYER
Senior • Forward • Layton, Utah • Layton HS
• The fourth Gaucho individual to earn the Best Hustle honor – and the seventh citation overall for UCSB
• Averaged 4.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 0.7 blocked shots per game while making 18 starts in 29 appearances
• Pulled down four or more rebounds in 16 contests
