BIG WEST AT A GLANCE
UC Santa Barbara Hosts Tri-Meet
In a preview of the Big West Championships scheduled for May, UC Santa Barbara is hosting a tri-meet with fellow conference foes Cal Poly and UC Riverside also participating at Pauley Track. Several athletes are entered into the meet who turned in all-conference performances at the 2018 Big West Championships. Cal Poly enters three individual conference champions into the meet in sophomore Brooke Tjerrild (women’s pole vault), junior Abibat Rahman-Davies (women’s triple jump) and senior Sean McDermott (men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase).
Cal State Fullerton Welcomes Competitors To Ben Brown Invitational
Cal State Fullerton hosts its first of three meets this season with the Ben Brown Invitational taking place at the Titan Track Complex this weekend. The Titans welcome a slew of teams including Big West foe UC Irvine, Army West Point, Pepperdine, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona. The two-time defending Big West men’s champion, CSF returns 2018 Freshman of the Year Rasaun House to the fold. House placed second in the 200 meters at last year’s conference meet.
UC Davis, Hawai‘i Also Host Meets
UC Davis hosts its annual Aggie Open at Woody Wilson Track this weekend. The Aggies welcome fellow Division I programs San Jose State, Santa Clara, Sacramento State and Pacific to the two-day competition. Defending Big West champion Kyle Clancy (men’s high jump) is expected to compete after winning the conference meet with a mark of 6 feet, 9 inches last season. Teammate Drew Xandrine-Anderson also topped the Big West podium with a meet-winning triple jump mark of 51-10.50. In a busy week of home action, Hawai‘i also hosts an outdoor gathering – the Sunrise Meet #2 – in an all-comers invite against competitors of all ages and skill levels.
Big West Track & Field Championship Comes To UC Santa Barbara
For the first time in over 35 years, the Big West Championships will be held at UC Santa Barbara. UCSB last hosted the conference championship in 1983. That year, men’s track and field was a Big West sport, but women’s track and field had not joined the rotation. It was the very next year, 1984, when the conference added track and field as a women’s sport with three initial members – UC Irvine, UCSB and UNLV. Pauley Track will be home to the multi-events portion of the meet (May 3-4) and the full section (May 10-11).
