BEACH, TITANS SET FOR SHOWDOWN
Two of the top women’s programs in the Big West square off this week looking to stay undefeated in the standings.
Long Beach State travels to Cal State Fullerton for a match that got postponed last week due to inclement weather. The match was rescheduled for Saturday at the Titan Tennis Courts.
The Beach is 3-0 in conference play following home wins over UC Riverside, CSUN and Cal Poly. The Titans have accumulated home wins over UC Davis and Hawai‘i to stake themselves to a 2-0 Big West start. CSF earned the win in head-to-head play last year.
Both squads are playing well this year – the Beach off to a 7-1 start while the Titans are 5-2, including three wins in a row. CSF is in the midst of a seven-match homestand.
GAUCHOS FACE RANKED TEAM
UC Santa Barbara is also in the undefeated column as far as Big West women’s play goes. The Gauchos picked up a road win at UC Davis in their league opener on Sunday. UCSB now focuses its attention on getting the opportunity to play another ranked opponent. The squad had matches scheduled last week against No. 5 UCLA and No. 16 California, but neither were played due to inclement weather. UCSB travels to No. 23 Pepperdine on Saturday before following up with Loyola Marymount on Sunday. The Gauchos have won two straight and are 5-3 on the year.
UC IRVINE REACHES DOUBLE-DIGIT WIN TOTAL
The UC Irvine women have won four straight and six of their last seven contests to improve to 11-3 on the year. UCI played nine straight road matches during the fall season - all countable toward the spring standings – and has found success in tight matches. The ‘Eaters have won three of their last four battles by 4-3 scores. They continue a five-match homestand this week.
UC DAVIS, HAWAI‘I PLAY IN GOLDEN STATE INVITE
UC Davis co-hosts the Golden State Invitational with Sacramento State this week. In addition to the two hosts, the eight-team field include Grand Canyon, Fresno State, Nevada, Saint Mary’s and fellow Big West school Hawai‘i. Four schools start out the tourney at each site and play a pair of matches on day one, with tournament placing matches taking place on the second day.
GAUCHO TRIO RANKED IN ITA SINGLES POLL
The Oracle/ITA men’s singles rankings featured three UC Santa Barbara players ranked within the top 125.
Senior Nicolas Moreno de Alboran is the highest ranked player among the three Gauchos. He’s No. 13 this week. Teammate Joseph Guillin is ranked No. 39, while sophomore Victor Krustev sits at No. 94.
