UC DAVIS RECORDS FIRST WINS IN PROGRAM HISTORY
The historic first season of UC Davis beach volleyball got underway on Saturday, with the Aggies sweeping Sacramento
State in a doubleheader that also become a home opener: the rainfall early in the week forced the move to the campus’s beach courts on the Howard Intramural Field.
The Aggies continue action this weekend with a pair of matches at Stanford, Saturday. The Aggies face their first ranked opponents on the year in the No. 13 Cardinal and No. 11 California.
LONG BEACH STATE PICKS UP MID-WEEK WINS
No. 8 Long Beach State welcomed Stetson and Loyola Marymount to its sand Wednesday, and defeated the Hatters and Lions, 4-1 and 3-2, respectively. The Beach will play another set of matches Thursday against Stetson and No. 4 Florida State. This is the second top-5 opponent the Beach has seen in 2019.
BIG WEST IN THE NATIONAL POLL
For the third-straight week, three programs represent the Big West Conference in the national poll. Hawai‘i cracks the top 5 at No. 5 while Cal Poly comes in at No. 7 and Long Beach State maintaints the No. 8 spot. All three programs will be in action this weekend.
RAINBOW WARRIORS HEAD TO SOCAL
After a being idle in Week 2 of the season, No. 5 Hawai’i returns to action this weekend when it competes in the East Meets West Challenge in Manhattan Beach, Calif..
The Rainbow Wahine will face four ranked squads, including a trio of top ten teams: No. 4 Florida State, No. 6 LSU and No. 9 Florida International in addition to No. 18 TCU.
This will be the second straight year that the SandBows compete in the event which pits the top teams from opposite ends of the country against each other at Manhattan Beach Pier. The Bows went 3-1 in last year’s tournament while facing the same opponents with the lone loss coming against Florida State. UH is undefeated all-time against TCU (4-0), LSU (2-0), and Florida International (4-0).
BIG WEST EXPANDS TO SEVEN
With UC Davis’ addition of beach volleyball, the Big West Conference expands to seven teams for the 2019 season.
2019 CONFERENCE POSTSEASON
A seven-team, double-elimination conference tournament will take place at Zuma Beach in Malibu, Calif. on April 26 through April 27. All seven teams advance to the double-elimination tournament on Friday and Saturday with the No. 1 seed receiving a first round bye. Seeding of the event will be determined by the conference office based on criteria that includes head-to-head results, common opponents, AVCA national poll and overall records.
