BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

HAWAI‘I OPENS SEASON AT 2-2
Hawai‘i went 2-2 in the first weekend of play at the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Classic at Queens Beach.  The SandBows took on defending national champs UCLA in a rematch of last year’s NCAA semifinals, won by the Bruins. UH fell, 5-0, a score that did not reflect the competitiveness of the match. UCLA won Courts 3 and 4 in straight sets to go up 2-0, but the other three courts went the distance with the match’s ultimate outcome riding on the results of a trio of three-set matches.

The SandBows will have the weekend off before heading to Manhattan Beach, Calif., for the East Meets West Challenge, March 9-10. UH will face TCU, Florida State, Florida International, and LSU during the two-day tournament.

UC DAVIS TO PLAY INAUGURAL BEACH MATCHES
UC Davis will make history this weekend as the team readies to play the program’s first-ever beach contests.  The Aggies first travel to Sacramento State on Saturday for two matches against its league foe.

BIG WEST COMPETITION ON DECK
No. 3 Pepperdine hosts three Big West programs this weekend in CSUN, No. 8 Long Beach State at CSU Bakersfield.  Each Big West squad will see each other once on Saturday.

Pepperdine is the first ranked opponent Long Beach State and CSU Bakersfield will face this season.

CSU BAKERFIELD HAS PERFECT WEEKEND
Cal State Bakersfield opened the 2019 season with a perfect 2-0 mark at home.  The Roadrunners defeated Cal State LA 5-0 and Vanguard 4-1 to close out its first competitions.  CSUB heads south this weekend to face ranked foes.

BIG WEST EXPANDS TO SEVEN
With UC Davis’ addition of beach volleyball, the Big West Conference expands to seven teams for the 2019 season.

UC DAVIS HIRES FORMER BIG WEST STANDOUT
Former Big West Conference Freshman of the Year and a professional player for the past decade, Ali McColloch joins the UC Davis coaching staff as the university’s first head beach volleyball coach.  Formerly Ali Daley, McColloch began her collegiate volleyball career at Long Beach State, where she made the All-Big West first team and garnered the conference’s top freshman honors in 2005 before transferring to UCLA.

2019 CONFERENCE POSTSEASON
A seven-team, double-elimination conference tournament will take place at Zuma Beach in Malibu, Calif. on April 26 through April 27.  All seven teams advance to the double-elimination tournament on Friday and Saturday with the No. 1 seed receiving a first round bye. Seeding of the event will be determined by the conference office based on criteria that includes head-to-head results, common opponents, AVCA national poll and overall records.
