Women's Tennis Shifts To Conference Play This Week

2/13/2019

Tennis Release No. 5

NOTEBOOK

BUSY WEEK AHEAD FOR WOMEN’S TENNIS
The Big West tennis schedule is filled up with matches this week including several conference contests on the women’s side.

Long Beach State and Hawai‘i are already 1-0 in league play. Both squads are back in action looking to stay atop the standings in the Big West. The Beach, which have won three straight to open the 2019 campaign, host CSUN in one match. The Rainbow Wahine hit the road for the first time this season and look to find success at UC Riverside and UC Irvine.

The ‘Eaters will be playing their spring opener when UH comes to town on Friday. UCI contested nine countable matches in the fall and posted a 7-2 record.

UCI also hosts UC Davis on Saturday in another conference contest, and then the Aggies turn around to face Cal State Fullerton on Sunday and CSUN on Monday to complete a whirlwind tour of southern California.

MEN ALSO TAKING ON FULL SCHEDULE
Five of the six men’s tennis clubs are in action this week, and a handful with multiple matches.

UC Irvine is on the road for three contests in the state of Utah, facing BYU, Weber State and Idaho State. UC Riverside heads east for a trio of matches against Delaware, St. Francis Brooklyn and Coppin State.

UC Davis resumes action for the first time in two weeks with a home match against UNLV on Friday followed by a quick jaunt to the Bay Area to tangle with Santa Clara on Saturday. UC Santa Barbara also leaves the state with a pair of matches in the heartland versus Drake and Utah State.

Cal Poly has a single match at home on Saturday against Nevada.

PLAYERS NATIONALLY RANKED BY ITA
The Oracle/ITA men’s singles rankings were updated on Feb. 6 and three UC Santa Barbara players are listed.

Senior Nicolas Moreno de Alboran, who concluded fall play at No. 6 nationally, is now No. 9 overall. Teammate Joseph Guillin is No. 25.  Sophomore Victor Krustev is the newest addition to the rankings.  A win over a nationally ranked opponent from USC recently propelled Krustev to No. 87 overall.

In doubles, the UCSB tandem of Joseph Rotheram and Jose Soto broke into the ITA rankings at No. 58.

UCSB continued the recognition on the women’s side of the rankings with freshman Elizaveta Volodko checking in at No. 123 this week.

INDIAN WELLS HOSTS BIG WEST TOURNAMENT
Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Tournament for the 16th consecutive year. One of the premier facilities in the United States – and a host to the BNP Paribas Open – Indian Wells will host all six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 25-28.  Since 2004, the first year the tournament was held at IWTG, the UCSB men have won nine titles while LBSU is the women’s leader with 11.
