Long Beach State Seeks Continued Solid Start
Tennis Release No. 4
TENNIS HOPES FOR DRY WEATHER
Rainy weather last week wreaked havoc with the Big West tennis schedule as several matches were either postponed or cancelled altogether.
Some of those contests will attempt to be played again this week. Cal Poly’s match at Fresno State, originally scheduled for Feb. 1, will now be played on Saturday. UC Santa Barbara initially had a match at Fresno State for Feb. 3, but that will now be contested this Friday.
Long Beach State had a home contest against San Diego slated for last Friday, but repeated inclement weather forced its move to this Sunday.
YOUTHFUL LONG BEACH STATE OFF TO 2-0 START
The Long Beach State women’s tennis team is a collection of youth with four freshmen, three sophomores and a junior. That hasn’t stopped the squad from starting out the 2019 season with a 2-0 record after early wins over UC Riverside and San Diego State.
Freshmen Emma Bardet (France), Zara Lennon (Mauritius), Dominique Meyer (Switzerland) and Wiktoria Rutkowska (Poland) have all played a role in the early season success with Rutkowska and Meyer already earning Big West Athlete of the Week awards.
LBSU hopes to remain the only undefeated team in the Big West - men or women - following this weekend’s home matches against Nevada and San Diego. The Toreros are receiving votes in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll.
PLAYERS NATIONALLY RANKED BY ITA
The Oracle/ITA men’s singles rankings were updated on Wednesday and three UC Santa Barbara players are listed.
Senior Nicolas Moreno de Alboran, who concluded fall play at No. 6 nationally, is now No. 9 overall. Teammate Joseph Guillin is No. 25. Sophomore Victor Krustev is the newest addition to the rankings. A win over a nationally ranked opponent from USC recently propelled Krustev to No. 87 overall.
In doubles, the UCSB tandem of Joseph Rotheram and Jose Soto broke into the ITA rankings at No. 60.
UCSB continued the recognition on the women’s side of the rankings with freshman Elizaveta Volodko checking in at No. 123 this week.
MAKE THE BEST OF IT
The Hawai‘i men host Pacific for two matches on back-to-back days this weekend before taking a three-week hiatus. The ‘Bows will emerge on Mar. 2 in Stockton as part of the Pacific Mountain Invitational.
