Krustev, Elpusan Earn Tennis Weekly Honors

VICTOR KRUSTEV, UC SANTA BARBARA – MEN'S TENNIS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Victor Krustev’s upset win against an opponent ranked No. 19 nationally in singles earned the UC Santa Barbara sophomore his first career Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week award.

• Krustev dominated USC’s Laurens Verboven with a 6-2, 6-3 straight sets victory at No. 3 singles, picking up the lone point for the Gauchos in a 6-1 defeat to the fifth-ranked Trojans in the championship match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.

• It was Krustev’s second career win over a ranked foe.

• Krustev went 2-0 in singles for the week as he also topped South Alabama’s Loic Cloes by scores of 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. The win over Cloes clinched UCSB’s 4-1 match victory over South Alabama.

• At No. 2 doubles, Krustev and partner Joseph Rotheram notched a 6-3 win over South Alabama’s Louis Delcour and Sacha Modica.

TIA ELPUSAN, UC RIVERSIDE – WOMEN'S TENNIS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Notching her second career Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week award, UC Riverside sophomore Tia Elpusan went 1-1 in singles and 2-0 in doubles.

• In the season and Big West opener for the Highlanders, Elpusan picked up a solid 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6) win over Long Beach State’s Emma Bardet at No. 2 singles, one of two points for UCR in the 5-2 team loss.

• The Highlanders lost the doubles point to the Beach, but Elpusan and teammate Sara Khattab won their match at the No. 1 position, 6-4, over Wiktoria Rutkowska and Dominique Meyer.

• In a road loss to San Diego State, Elpusan and Khattab again earned a doubles victory at No. 1. This time they downed Jenny Moinard and Shakhnoza Khatamova, 6-4.

• Elpusan nearly sealed an undefeated week, but lost a hard fought 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 battle in singles to Mia Smith of SDSU.
