Fresh off his second career selection as Big West Player of the Week, UC Santa Barbara senior Corey Chavers claimed his first Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Player of the Week honor on Tuesday.
The 6-foot-4 outside hitter averaged 4.33 kills per set and hit .459 (39-5-74) in a pair of wins over top 10 programs. He tallied 19 kills on .441 (19-4-34) hitting efficiency in a five-set triumph over No. 9 Lewis. In a four-set victory against No. 5 Loyola-Chicago, Chavers pounded 20 kills with just one error in 40 attempts for .475 attack percentage.
Against Lewis, the Downey, Calif. native added seven digs and four blocks to help the Gauchos defensively.
Chavers is the 11th Gaucho in program history to earn the AVCA National Player of the Week honor, and the first since Jeff Menzel on May 2, 2011.
