SQUADS GEAR UP FOR KICKOFF WEEKEND
Both UC Santa Barbara tennis squads – and the Cal Poly men’s team – are getting ready for a stiff test of competition with nationally ranked opponents awaiting in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
The UCSB and Cal Poly men’s squads are situated in the same four-team pod at Marks Tennis Stadium. The Gauchos face South Alabama in the opening match while the Mustangs tangle with host and No. 5-ranked USC in the other. UCSB and Cal Poly could meet in the championship or consolation round. The Gauchos and Mustangs have met in each of the last three Big West Tournament finals.
On the women’s side, UCSB travels across the country to take part in another ITA Kick-Off Weekend event involving No. 11 Florida, Mississippi State and NC State. The Gauchos drew the host Gators for the opening match.
CONFERENCE MATCH ON TAP
The dual match season openers for both the Long Beach State and UC Riverside women’s tennis teams doubles as the Big West opener for both. The Highlanders travel to the Rhodes Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Beach have won all 13 conference openers since the Big West began round-robin scheduling in 2006. LBSU is 22-0 against UCR all-time.
MORENO DE ALBORAN RANKED NO. 6 IN SINGLES
UC Santa Barbara senior Nicolas Moreno de Alboran earned a final fall singles ranking of No. 6 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Based on available records, the ranking is believed to be the highest by a Big West player since UNLV’s Roger Pettersson finished No. 8 in the final 1996 ITA poll. UC Irvine’s Mark Kaplan achieved a ranking of No. 5 in the final 1989 ITA poll.
Moreno de Alboran, the 2018 Big West Player of the Year and a three-time first team all-conference standout, earned the high praise on the basis of advancing to the semifinals of the ITA National Fall Championships and the quarterfinals of the ITA Southwest Regional.
The fall ITA rankings also placed UCSB junior Joseph Guillin at No. 22 in singles and Hawai‘i sophomore Blaz Seric at No. 124.
