UC San Diego Preps For First ESPN3 Broadcast
2019 Men's Volleyball Release No. 4
UC San Diego's men's volleyball will produce the first of 13 home matches via ESPN3 when the Tritons host UCLA Friday in the recently renovated RIMAC Arena.
The Week That Was
The Big West played 10 matches last week – all on the road and all against teams ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association top 15. The members combined for a respectable 5-5 mark, and the conference’s aggregate non-conference record now stands at an impressive 27-10 overall. Top-ranked Long Beach State ousted then-No. 6 UCLA in a rematch of last year’s national title match. UC Santa Barbara picked up solid wins at then-No. 14 Ball State and then-No. 13 Purdue Fort Wayne, while CSUN also toppled the Mastodons on the same midwest trip. UC Irvine split a pair of contests with then-No. 9 Stanford
Home Cooking On Tap
After a full week of road contests, Big West teams are looking forward to returning home for a full slate of action. Nine of the 10 matches on this week’s schedule take place in a Big West facility. No. 5 Loyola-Chicago and No. 9 Lewis play at CSUN and UC Santa Barbara. No. 7 UCLA is at UC San Diego and No. 6 Pepperdine visits UC Irvine in another challenging week for the Big West.
Beach To Unveil National Championship Banner
Long Beach State did not drop a set in winning six straight matches on the road to begin the 2019 season, a stellar start for the reigning national champions. To commemorate that achievement, the Beach will reveal the 2018 National Championship banner at Friday’s home opener against USC in the Walter Pyramid. Replica banners will be given to the first 1,000 fans in attendance.
Tritons Ready For Home Opener On ESPN3
UC San Diego returns from a season-opening six-match roadtrip to face UCLA in its home opener on Friday. The non-conference match will serve as the first of 13 home ESPN3 appearances. The Tritons will receive national exposure through their first-ever ESPN3 production in RIMAC Arena. Productions will originate from the newly-constructed video production suite, located in RIMAC Arena. The state-of-the-art facility was built as part of a recent renovation of the arena, which included the installation of a 50’x15’ Daktronics video board and new courtside LED scorer’s table.
Long Beach State held its No. 1 position in Monday’s AVCA top 15 poll release, and have had that distinction since Jan. 22, 2018, a span of 17 consecutive weeks. Hawai‘i and UC Irvine switched spots at No. 2 and No. 3. The second-ranked ‘Bows do not return to action until Feb. 1. UCSB and CSUN are ranked No. 10 and No. 11 this week.
Number One In All The Land
The Big West is ranked No. 1 nationally in three team and two individual categories. Hawai‘i is No. 1 in hitting percentage (.493), kills per set (14.78) and assists per set (13.33).
