ICYMI: Here are the top five things that happened in the Big West last week….In Case You Missed It!


1. Cal Poly, Hawaii Headed To NCAA Tournament; UCI, UCSB Invited To NIVC

Cal Poly, the 2018 Big West Conference Champion, and the University of Hawai’i are headed to the postseason as announced by the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee.  The Mustangs are making their second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, and 16th overall, after earning the league’s automatic bid after tallying a 15-1 conference mark to claim its fifth title. The University of Hawai’i is headed to its 37th overall and 26th straight NCAA DI Women’s Volleyball Championship after receiving an at-large berth.  Full Story

It was announced Sunday night that UC Irvine (16-12) and UC Santa Barbara (17-11) accepted invitations to the second annual National Invitational Volleyball Championship, which was revived in 2017 after its six-year run from 1989-1995. Full Story


2. Big West Announces Women’s Volleyball All-Conference

Back-to-back Big West Conference champions Cal Poly secured at least a share of all three top awards. Junior Torrey Van Winden was name Big West Player of the Year and Sam Crosson secured his second straight Big West Coach of the Year accolade.  Cal Poly’s Avalon DeNecochea, along with UC Irvine’s Abby Marjama, received Big West Co-Freshman of the Year honors.  Full Story


3. UCI Tops Indiana State To Claim GCU Tournament Title; Remains Undefeated To Start Season

Behind double-doubles from sophomore Jordan Sanders and junior Lauren Saiki, the UC Irvine women’s basketball team toppled Indiana State, 77-61, to claim the GCU Thanksgiving Classic title Saturday afternoon at GCU Arena. The Anteaters went 2-0 in the tournament and improved to 5-0 on the season, marking their best start in program history. UCI handed Indiana State its first loss as the Sycamores dropped to 3-1 overall. Full Story


4. Gauchos Use Big Second Half Run To Win Fourth In A Row

Behind 48-39 with 14:21 left in its game at Idaho on Saturday, UC Santa Barbara went on a devastating 23-2 run over a 10-minute span to take a commanding 62-50 lead en route to a 66-55 win in the final game of the Vandal Holiday Hoop Classic. The Gauchos (5-1), who have won four consecutive games and are off to their best start since 2007-08 when they also opened at 5-1, struggled offensively but stayed in the game with their defense, setting the stage for the decisive rally.
