Tournament Play Dots Thanksgiving Week For Women's Hoops

Big West Women's Basketball Weekly Release No. 3

Thanksgiving week on the Big West women's basketball schedule means tournament play as seven events dot the landscape. Four of those tournaments will be held in home venues as Cal Poly hosts the ShareSLO Holiday Beach Classic, CSUN hosts the Warner Center Marriott Thanksgiving Classic, Long Beach State hosts the Beach Classic Presented by Southland Credit Union and Hawai'i hosts the Rainbow Wahine Showdown.

Big West Celebrates 50/35
The 2018-19 season marks the 50th anniversary for men’s sports in the Big West Conference, and the 35th for women’s.  All season long, the Big West Conference will celebrate the history of all conference sports.  Join us as we pay homage to the student-athletes, coaches, staffs, communities and fans who have helped pave the way.

• As the pursuit of 2,000 points continues for CSUN’s Channon Fluker and UC Davis’ Morgan Bertsch, lets look back at the pioneer of the 2K point club, Long Beach State’s Penny Toler. Toler played at LBSU from 1987-89 and scored 2,193 points in only 101 games. Her point total ranks fifth all-time in league history but Toler remains the lone player in Big West history to hit 2,000 career points in only three seasons.

• Year one of women’s basketball in the then Pacific Coast Athletic Association came in 1983-84 with UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and UNLV comprising the league. The Lady Rebels and Anteaters both put up impressive debut seasons as they won 24 and 20 games, respectively, and UNLV earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Highlanders Bounce Back
UC Riverside started the season with three road losses in tough environments, but the Highlanders shook that off to win back-to-back games at home. UCR will have to get used to the road as its next seven in a row and eight of its next nine contests are away from the SRC Arena. The club won’t play another home against until December 28 against New Mexico state, its final non-conference home game before Big West play.

Happy To Be Back
UC Santa Barbara’s Coco Miller missed all of last season due to injury but has played well in her return to the court this season. Miller is averaging 11.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game, having started all four contests for the Gauchos. She has scored in double figures in two of her last three games, including a season-best 20 against Loyola Marymount. Miller has also resumed her status as an iron woman, playing 39 or more minutes in three of four games so far.

Hot Start From The Kiwi
Cal State Fullerton freshman Amiee Book was highly touted coming into this season and has not disappointed so far. The forward is averaging 14.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and is shooting a robust 64.9% from the floor and 57.1% from deep. Book has scored in double figures in every game so far in her collegiate career and has played no fewer than 26 minutes in every contest off the bench.

New Role, New Devin
Cal Poly senior Devin Stanback was a key cog in the rotation a year ago, averaging 8.2 points and 3.6 rebounds in 18.8 minutes per game. With so many newcomers to the roster, the forward has been thrust into a leading role on the club this year. Stanback is averaging 16.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in 20.6 minutes per outing. A major factor in her success has been increased efficiency on the offensive end. Stanback is shooting 55.6% from the floor and 50% from three-point land this season. A year ago, she shot 46.5% from the field and didn’t attempt a three-pointer.

Here’s a look where UC Davis’ Morgan Bertsch and CSUN’s Channon Fluker stand on the league’s all-time scoring list, and who they will pass, on their way to 2,000 points.
