Cal Poly Earns Two At-Large Invites To NCAA Championships
The outstanding season by the Cal Poly women's cross country program will continue as two Mustangs runners were selected to participate in the NCAA Championships.
Cal Poly had juniors Miranda Daschian and Katie Izzo qualify for the national meet, thanks to top 25 performances at the NCAA West Regional meet last Friday in Sacramento. Daschian, the 2018 Big West Women's Athlete of the Year, finished the Regional 6K in 18th at 20:10.3, while her teammate Izzo wasn't too far behind in 22nd at 20:14.5. They were two of the four at-large selections out of the West Region.
The duo will now travel to the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis., for the NCAA Championships, the second time they have competed on the course this season. Cal Poly previously competed in the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals in mid-October with Izzo finishing 50th in 21:13.3 and Daschian finishing 61st in 21:24.1.
Thirty-one teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large.
Thirty-eight individuals were selected to participate in each championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process. All individual qualifiers finished in the top 25 in their regions.
The University of Wisconsin will host the championships on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. The women’s 6K race will begin at 11:45 a.m. Eastern Time, followed by the men’s 10K race at 12:45 p.m. Eastern Time. The championship races and award ceremonies will also be broadcast live on FloTrack.
