UC Riverside Wins First Big West Title
UC Riverside and UC Davis battled for 110 minutes to a scoreless tie, but the Highlanders won a penalty kick shootout, 4-2, to capture the program's first Big West Men's Soccer Tournament title on Saturday at UCR Soccer Stadium.
The Highlanders advance to their first NCAA Tournament. They will learn their opponent and destination on Monday at 10:00 a.m. (PT) on NCAA.com.
UCR, which began the season 0-7-1, finished 7-2-2 over the final 11 games and tallied seven shutouts over that stretch. The Highlanders outshot the Aggies 15-8, including a match-high seven from Big West Tournament Most Valuable Player Daniel Aguirre.
However, Wallis Lapsley came up with seven big saves for UC Davis and the two teams found themselves in a penalty kick shootout for the right to go to the NCAA Tournament.
UC Davis was in a PK shootout for the fourth time in its last six tournament contests – and for the third time came up short in the battle.
UC Riverside converted PK opportunities from Aguirre, Roberto Garcia-Vargas, Issa Badawiya and Daniel Castaneda. The Aggies had Jake Haupt and Emmanuel Doherty score for their side, but Robert Mejia and Matt Baringer missed.
UC Davis fell to 11-4-5 and will await a potential NCAA at-large bid.
