ICYMI: Here are the top five things that happened in the Big West last week….In Case You Missed It!

1. Long Beach State Claims Big West Tournament Title

Long Beach State’s seniors came through in a big way, as Ashley Gonzales and Dana Fujikuni scored the goals and Imani McDonald recorded her second straight postseason shutout as the Beach won their fourth Big West Tournament championship with a 2-0 win over UC Santa Barbara. The Big West Midfielder of the Year, Fujikuni was named the Tournament MVP after scoring in both games for Long Beach State (12-5-3), while McDonald recorded her 12th individual shutout of her career as the senior didn’t allow a goal throughout the tournament. 2. UC Davis, UC Riverside Advance To Tourney Finals

No. 5 seed UC Davis defeated top seeded UC Irvine in a penalty kick shootout, while No. 2 seed UC Riverside dethroned reigning tournament champion Cal State Fullerton in Saturday’s semifinals of the Big West Men’s Soccer Tournament. Full Story

3. Cal Poly Nabs Four Major Cross Country Awards

After sweeping the Big West Cross Country Championships, the Mustangs of Cal Poly earned some more history as the program earned four of the six major awards. Cal Poly had Mark Conover win the Men’s Coach of the Year honor, while Priscilla Bayley came away with the Women’s Coach of the Year award. Their top runners came away with hardware as Jake Ritter claimed Men’s Athlete of the Year and Miranda Daschian the Women’s Athlete of the Year. It marks the sixth time in conference history that a school swept the Coach of the Year and Athlete of the Year awards in the same season (1985, ‘86, ‘87, 2013, ‘16). The Freshman of the Year awards were distributed among three schools as Tyler Spencer of Long Beach State claimed the Men’s Freshman of the Year and the Women’s Freshman of the Year was split among Cal State Fullerton’s Lucina Vincent and UC Davis’ Eva Goodisson. 4. Big West Announces 2018 Men’s Soccer All-Conference Team

The major awards were spread out among five schools to highlight the announcement of the 2018 Big West Men’s Soccer All-Conference Team on Tuesday.  Regular season champion UC Irvine took home three primary Big West awards with Ivan Canales as Offensive Player of the Year, Daniel Crisostomo as Midfielder of the Year and Yossi Raz as Coach of the Year.  Repeat award recipients included CSUN’s Henrik Regitning earning Goalkeeper of the Year recognition and Roy Boateng of UC Davis collecting Defensive Player of the Year accolades.  Benji Kikanovic of Sacramento State and Ben Roach of UC Santa Barbara were named Co-Freshman of the Year honorees.  Full Story

5. Big West Announces 2018 Women’s Soccer All-Conference Team

The major awards were spread out among four schools to highlight the announcement of the 2018 Big West Women’s Soccer All-Conference Team on Wednesday. Regular season champion Long Beach State took home three primary Big West awards with Dana Fujikuni as Midfielder of the Year, Sarah Maher as Defensive Player of the Year and Mauricio Ingrassia as Coach of the Year. Raisa Strom-Okimoto  earned Offensive Player of the Year honors to become the first-ever recipient of the award from Hawai‘i while UC Irvine’s Maddie Newsom was named Goalkeeper of the Year and Cal Poly’s MacKenzie George earned Freshman of the Year accolades.  Full Story
