Long Beach State Heads to USC For the NCAA First Round

Long Beach State will make its seventh appearance in the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer championship when the Beach takes on USC in Los Angeles, Calif. The field of 64 teams was announced Monday afternoon by the Division I Women's Soccer committee.
The Beach owns a 3-6-0 overall record in the tournament and most recently represented the Big West in the national tournament in 2016 when it traveled to Santa Clara, Calif. With his seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament, coach Mauricio Ingrassia has more tourney appearances than any other coach in conference history, including a trip to the Elite 8 in 2011.
The Beach will see USC for the first-time ever in the NCAA Tournament this week. However, they faced the Trojans in the regular season earlier this year when USC defeated LBSU 3-0 on Sept. 14. The Beach takes a 12-5-3 overall mark and a five-game unbeaten streak into the first round of NCAA action.

LONG BEACH STATE COMPLETES TITLE SWEEP
After a 2-0 victory in the Big West Tournament championship Sunday, Long Beach State completed the double to secure both the regular season and tournament crowns. The Beach began its tournament run with a 1-0 win over #4 seed UC Davis, Thursday, on a goal from senior Dana Fujikuni in the semifinals. The midfielder would go on to record the insurance goal in Sunday’s championship to propel LBSU to the NCAA Tournament. Ashley Gonzales scored her fourth tournament goal all-time Sunday and notched her 36th career score, a program record. Gonzales’ 36 goals are ninth-best in the Big West record book. The Beach brought home its fourth tourney title overall and second in three years.
Long Beach State earned its fifth Big West regular season championship and its first since sharing the title three-ways in 2018 (Cal State Fullerton, UC Santa Barbara).
FUJIKUNI IS MOST VALUABLE
Long Beach State senior midfielder Dana Fujikuni earned Most Valuable Player honors after tallying two goals in the 2018 Big West Tournament. Her two scores tie for fifth-most in the tourney record book. The Midfielder of the Year is the fourth from the Beach to earn the award (Emily Kingsborough - 2010, Sara Balcer - 2011, Mimi Rangel - 2016).
BIG WEST TOURNAMENT RECAP
Big West Tournament action kicked off at Anteater Stadium on Nov. 1st with 1-seed Long Beach State’s 1-0 shutout win over 4-seed UC Davis. UC Santa Barbara (2-seed) then defeated 3-seed and host UC Irvine in a 1-0 win. UC Santa Barbara made its first championship appearance in 10 years while the Beach made its fourth trip to the title game in five years.
With a 2-0 victory on championship Sunday, Long Beach and senior goalkeeper Imani McDonald etched their performances in the Big West record book, tied for the most clean sheets in a single Tournament (2). Fujikuni’s two goal in the Tournament tie for fifth-most while her four points, tie for seventh-most.
